Ron Tutt was an American drummer who played concerts and recording sessions for Elvis Presley, the Carpenters, Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, and Jerry Garcia. Tutt performed for TCB Band (“Taking Care of Business”), Elvis Presley’s touring and recording band, on the recommendation of TCB keyboardist Larry Muhoberac.

Tutt played on Billy Joel’s second and third albums. He played on the groundbreaking 1973 album Piano Man (all tracks except “Captain Jack”) and 1974’s Streetlife Serenade. Other musician albums Tutt played on include Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons.

Around early 1974, Tutt began recording and touring with the Jerry Garcia Band, and also the Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders short Legion of Mary. Beginning with the García Compliments studio album (1974), Tutt played drums for the Jerry Garcia Band for four years before moving on. During this time, Tutt also played drums on Garcia’s studio albums Reflections (1976) and Cats Under the Stars (1978). In 1982, however, Tutt returned to the studio with Garcia to help record Run for the Roses.

After the TCB Band disbanded after Presley’s death and several years recording and touring (1974–78) with Garcia, Tutt was invited by Neil Diamond to become Diamond’s permanent drummer for recording sessions and concerts.

Ronnie’s wife, Donna, shared the unfortunate news with TMZ and revealed that the musician took his last breath at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. Donna shared that he suffered from a heart condition but that he did not want to be hospitalized. He spent his last moments surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by Donna, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ronnie’s daughter, Terrie Tutt, also used Facebook to share the sad news. In a post shared with multiple photos of the drummer, she wrote: “It is with deep sadness that my family and I share in the loss of our beloved father. Legendary drummer Ronnie Tutt “has left the building.” He passed away in his house surrounded by his family ”.
