Rescue Operation to Save 5-Year-Old Boy enters 4th day

A major rescue operation has been launched to save a five-year-old boy from the Moroccan village of Ighran, in the northern province of Chefchaouen. It has entered its fourth day as the boy’s parents desperately await his safe return. Rayan fell into the 105-foot (32-meter) well on Tuesday night, February 1, while his father was fixing it.

Morocco’s official news agency MAP said the search party initially used five bulldozers to dig vertically to a depth of more than 31 meters. But later on Friday, February 4, rescuers began digging a horizontal tunnel to reach the little boy after topographical engineering experts helped with the rescue effort.

The reports added that to keep Rayan safe, crew members sent him oxygen and water using a rope. “I pray and pray to God that he comes out of that well alive and well. Please, God, ease my pain and his, in that dust hole,” the boy’s mother, Wassima Kharchich, told a local television channel.

Previously, camera footage had shown Rayan lying inside the well with the rope. On Friday night, February 4, authorities said the operation was nearing its final stage with no more than 20 feet left to dig to save the boy. Government spokesman Mustapha Baitas said: “The boy’s rescue is drawing near. Our hearts go out to the family and we pray that he returns to them as soon as possible.”

According to reports, medical personnel, including resuscitation specialists, and a helicopter were seen at the rescue site ready to give the boy the assistance he needs once he is rescued. Many people have gathered around the site to watch the operation as many offer prayers for the boy’s safe recovery online using the hashtag “#SaveRayan.”
