As a man was dying on a Bronx street from a shootout with police, his father snatched the gun from his fallen son and used it to continue the shooting with police, authorities said. Two off-duty police officers saw his son, Mike Rosado, 24, shooting a man on Valentine Ave. near 180th St. in Tremont shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The father and son had argued with a group of people on the corner when he turned physical and the son drew his gun and fired at an adversary, police said. I heard more than ten shots, ”said a resident who did not want to be identified. “When I got to the window they were still banging, ‘Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop,’ it stopped and then, ‘Bop, bop, bop.’
The policemen, who were in plainclothes after finishing their workday, identified themselves and told the shooter to drop the gun, but the gunman pointed it at them and began to unload, authorities said. No one was hurt.
The officers returned fire and fatally struck the gunman once in the chest, the officers said. Uniformed officers from the 46th Precinct Police Station, a block away, invaded the area after hearing the shots. “Immediately after the shooting, officers began to provide assistance to the 24-year-old man,” New York Police Patrol Chief Juanita Holmes said at a news conference.

Mike Rosado gets in his car and comes out with a gun, shooting into the air. His father takes it from his hands and stomps across the street. The younger Rosado follows him and takes the gun, and the two plainclothes officers approach from across the street, weapons in hand, the video shows.
At one point, the son drops the gun and her father snatches it off the ground and continues shooting. Another angle shows the younger, mortally wounded Rosado stumbling away and then crawling toward a parked car, leaning his back against it for support.
His father runs between cars, up and down the block, as people begin to surround his dying son. The father tries to pass the gun to a woman, who refuses, then to another, who takes it, the video shows. Surveillance video shows the father walking around the block, weaving between cars and then returning to the scene in hopes that police would not recognize him, sources said. The father has about 60 prior arrests on his record on charges that include drug possession, assault and weapons possession, the source said. The young Rosado had been arrested a handful of times for minor offenses like aggravated driving without a license, according to sources.
Local residents said the father had a history of getting into trouble, but they did not know him as violent. “He wouldn’t say he was a bad (man) but he got into a lot of trouble,” said a friend of Major Rosado. “He sounds like a father protecting his son. … he’s sad, but it happened. ”
Emergency medical services took the son to St. Barnabas Hospital but were unable to save him. Both officers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for ringing in the ears, officers said. The woman the father passed the gun to ran off, as did the shooter’s intended target. Police were still looking for both of them Sunday night.
