Peshe Schiller Suspended after inflammatory comments on COVID-19

A 70-year-old substitute teacher from New York City is currently under investigation for allegedly making racist comments in a class of fifth graders. The teacher, identified as Peshe Schiller, allegedly made disparaging remarks about China to a class of Chinese-American children.

This is just the most recent case of teachers being caught for their racist behavior, a problem that worries schools across the country. In late October, California teacher Candice Reed sparked a sensation over a video of her performing a Native American dance. On September 17, an Oregon teacher came to the school with a black face, supposedly to protest vaccine mandates. In March, Karla Lasiter in Arkansas was placed on leave after having a five-year-old black student unclog a toilet with his bare hands.

Schiller has defended her statements, but parental pressure has forced the school to suspend the teacher and open an investigation. “Why would someone who is a teacher talk like that to a group of 10-year-olds?” asked a parent about Schiller’s actions. After many complaints, the New York Department of Education has put her on leave while the Office of Equal Opportunity investigates. The incident has also alarmed parents, with one of them pointing out that “the school is supposed to be a safe place and unfortunately it is not in this case.”

‘They wanted you to have freedom’

The 70-year-old has reportedly been working as a teacher for 37 years, but this appears to be the first time she’s gotten into trouble. The event occurred on October 28, in the P.S. 204 at Bensonhurst. Schiller was filling in for another teacher that day, for the Gifted and Talented program. The class reportedly had 27 students, of whom 24 were Chinese-Americans. Schiller insists they were talking about Covid-19 when she allegedly made the racist comments.

When one child told the class that the virus was produced by animals, Schiller responded by saying, “Everyone has their own opinion, but I heard on the news that it was developed in a laboratory.” She doubled down on this, allegedly calling the virus a “biological weapon” and insisting that China developed it in a laboratory, a theory that has yet to be proven. However, she did not end there. Schiller allegedly also told the children that her parents left China because it is “a communist country and they don’t have freedom … they wanted you to have it.”

Furthermore, Schiller allegedly declared that all Chinese are communists, adding that the country “has no freedom of religion,” adding: “That is why you are here.” The class became public knowledge after a student wrote in her notes: “Today we had a racist teacher … She said that Covid-19 was manufactured in a laboratory by China. She also said that China did not have freedom of religion. Not true, obviously. ”

Parents say the incident is ‘alarming’

School officials learned of the incident after one of them overheard children discussing it over lunch. Administrators immediately removed Schiller from class and asked a school counselor to speak with the children the next day. The school also issued a statement on the matter, saying: “Racist and hateful behavior has no place in our schools, and this substitute was immediately suspended and removed from our classrooms … Schools should be safe havens and the school offered counseling and support to these students. ”

But it seems that the parents weren’t happy with the action. “It’s somewhat alarming. It taught me a lesson that I need … to start teaching them at this young age to pay attention to these kinds of problems. That even if an adult talks like that, you have to talk,” said one. father said. They added that it was a “grim reminder” that even school-age children are not safe from the anti-Asian sentiment taking over America.

In defense of him, Schiller told the media that “maybe they were upset because I said that China is a communist country, they were offended by it. But it is.” Several students also accused Schiller of calling Filipinos “dirty” and of removing his mask to describe his opposition to the masks’ mandates. Schiller denied attacking Filipinos and accused the children of “making things up” because he reprimanded them for using the wrong bathroom.
