Pasquale Buzzelli was a 34-year-old structural engineer. From Bergen County, NJ, he had grown up in Jersey City, the son of Italian immigrants. Buzzelli had won a scholarship to Cooper Union and the Port Authority hired him immediately.
Buzzelli’s survival is marked by guilt and gratitude. Just three months after the attack, Buzzelli returned to work at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. But it wasn’t easy as he constantly reminisced about his past. “I lost 14 companions who were with me when the tower collapsed. They were the last people I saw, then they left, “he told the Sun. “They were the victims and I was the survivor. Then I had a feeling of guilt. I just wanted to pretend it didn’t happen. ”

Pasquale Buzzelli, one of only two people to survive 9/11 by surfing through the collapse of the Twin Towers, has a mixture of survivor’s guilt and gratitude. They give me this gift here and I wanted to make the most of it, ”he told 60 Minutes Australia. At the same time, he struggles to understand why he survived and others did not.
Perhaps it was a mixture of luck, divine intervention, and quick wit in choosing a place to weather the collapse: huddled in the corner of a staircase against two concrete walls. Buzzelli was on the 22nd floor of the North Tower when he walked a small patch of concrete floor on another 18 floors, suffering only a broken leg and ankle.
Buzzelli came to work with the Port Authority on the 64th floor like any other day. The first sense of trouble was while he was riding the elevator, that he fell several feet before reaching his office. Once he got to his desk, Buzzelli called his wife, Louise. I said, ‘Don’t be alarmed, I’m fine, everything is fine, just, can you turn on the television and tell me what you see?’ ”Buzzelli told 60 Minutes.
At first, Buzzelli thought he was in no danger because the crash was above him. But then he had a “very strange feeling, so surreal. And now we knew we could die, ”he told the Sun newspaper in 2012. He called Louise again, who said,“ Why are you still there? And why are you calling me? Leave! “Buzzelli grabbed his briefcase, a flashlight, and some wet towels, then ran down the stairs. On the way, he met the approaching firefighters. They told him to keep going.
By the time he reached the 22nd floor, the building had begun to shake and rumble. Buzzelli told 60 Minutes that he dove into a corner and into the fetal position. “I felt the wall he was lying next to was cracking, and the floor was collapsing, and I was left in a fetal position with my eyes closed.
“I felt this, this gust of wind, as I was falling and, you know, this abrasive, sandblasting sensation, and I was stuck in, I was getting hit. I saw, you know, some flashes of light from being hit on the head. I just remember saying, you know, “I can’t believe this is how it is, my God, I cannot believe this is how I’m going to die.”
“Uh, you know, I thought of my wife, my unborn child … and, you know, I said, ‘Please, just God, please take care of them and make it a quick death,'” Buzzelli said. In surviving him, Buzzelli said that he has a second chance at life and wants to be the best person he can be. But he too is devastated by the loss of life.
