This has resulted in a lot of concern on Twitter, but what does this specific hand signal actually mean?

The Canadian Women’s Association created the hand signal for those who are victims of domestic violence to silently call for help. It’s known as the ‘signal for help’, and was created during the coronavirus pandemic as the group thought that the pandemic had made it more difficult for those who are at risk to reach out.

On their website, they state:

“The social isolation measures necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic are making it more difficult for those who are at risk of abuse or violence to safely reach out for help. ‘Signal for Help’ is a simple one-handed sign someone can use on a video call. It can help a person silently show they need help and want someone to check in with them in a safe way.”

In September, the Canadian Women’s Foundation made videos that went viral on social media to show women exactly how the hand signal works.
