In 1982, he founded Zvuki Mu. The name originates from a series of affectionate names beginning with the syllable mu, which Mamonov and Gorokhova would call each other, although the first appearance of the name Zvuki Mu occurs in some of the poems of Mamonov from the late 1960s. Around the same period, he began acting in films, and over the next decade, he wrote, produced, and performed in various one-man theater performances, establishing himself as a cult figure in Russia.

Zvuki Mu initially performed between 1982 and 1990, after which Mamonov started a new band called Mamonov and Aleksei with his half-brother Aleksei Bortnichuk. The new band played music in a similar style to Zvuki Mu, using backing tracks instead of living drums, but in 1993-4, they acquired a live drummer and developed a new hard rock sound back to basics, with Mamonov rewriting some old Zvuki Mu songs to fit this style. They released an album in 1992 and were recording a second when Mamonov decided to change the group’s name to Zvuki Mu, which resulted in the release of Zvuki Mu’s album Gruby zakat in 1995.
