Early life and education

Olessa spent the first eight years of her life in Tashkent and then moved with her parents, grandparents, and brother to the US – it wasn’t easy for her to adjust to a new place and it took some time before she could feel as home. They initially lived in Queens in New York City, but moved to Long Island in 1998.

Olessa did not go out as much as her peers, but rather spent her time at home watching the news – she was always looking forward to hearing what was going on in the country and in the world, and therefore her interest in news reporting grew as the time went by. She studied at the Plainview-Old Bethpage J.F.K high school and after she matriculated with great grades won a scholarship to Long Island University, which she accepted, and four years later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, she once again with grades that marked her as one of the best students. During her time at university, she integrated herself into the community of students, and also became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Career

As with most people in the US, as soon as she got her degree Olessa began searching for a job which would be perfect for her. She first found the job of a journalist for News12 Traffic and Weather, and saw it as a good way to start her career and gain some experience. She was soon promoted and became a member of the Night Broadcast News Traffic Team, and worked as an on-air correspondent for all five districts in New York City and Westchester.

After a while Olessa became bored and wanted to progress – it seemed to her that her career had stagnated. She began applying for jobs at other news channels, but it seems that News12 didn’t want to lose her, and therefore gave her an opportunity to do more – she moved to News12 Long Island, made changes to the studio as soon as she got there, and went on to fly in helicopters and report live about traffic updates – she was working for both NY1 and News12 channels at that time.

Even though things were looking good for her, she still wanted a change, and therefore moved to Hartford in Connecticut and began working with station WFSB-TV. This was a major change as she became a morning activity journalist on the station’s “News This Morning” program, while she also occasionally appearing in the “Better Connecticut” show.

In January 2014, Olessa became part of the WCVB-TV station as their traffic reporter for News Center 5’s EyeOpener broadcast. WCVB chose Olessa for the place months before she began working for them, but they had to wait for the New Year because she had a contract with her current employer. She is still working with the same team after five years there and can be seen in shows on Saturday and Sunday’s mornings alongside anchors Randy Price and Emily Riemer, and the channel’s meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon.

WCVB-TV station

WCVB-TV channel 5 is one of many ABC-affiliated TV stations, and is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The owner of the station is Hearst Television which is a part of Hearst Communications – the studio and the transmitter facilities of the station are located at separate locations in Needham, Massachusetts.
