A coroner identified the bodies as friends of Seton Hall student Nidhi Rana and Montclair State student Ayush Rana. The two bodies removed from the Passaic River this week have been confirmed as the pair of college students who disappeared during the Ida flood.
They were together in Passaic on September 1 when the storm hit and was last seen getting out of their car near a storm drain that empties into the Passaic River. A victim was found in the Passaic River in Kearny on Thursday. The other had been found in the same area on Wednesday.

A state medical examiner in Newark identified the two bodies found this week in the Passaic River as Nidhi Rana and Ayush Rana, a pair of friends who disappeared from Passaic on Sept. 1 when Hurricane Ida struck the city.
Rescuers had been searching for the friends, who are not related, since last week, when family members found Ayush’s car overturned near a flooded sewer on Brook and Main avenues. Search teams scoured the river throughout the week. They discovered a female body in the river near Kearny on Wednesday. A second body was discovered the next day near the Newark and Kearny border. Kearny’s efforts were beyond words, “Lora said in an interview.
The medical examiner identified both bodies around 2:40 p.m. Friday, Lora said. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office did not confirm the identities until Friday afternoon. On a Facebook Live, Lora said the strength shown by friends and both families during the search “speaks to the spirit and to Nidhi and Ayush. The reason for the delay in identification, Lora said, was to obtain the necessary medical records to a positive identification.
Last week, family members described Nidhi, 18, and Ayush, 21, as close friends, whose families migrated from the same village in India. When the city held an open graduation party last spring for students who graduated during the pandemic, the couple were crowned king and queen, Lora said. The two were inseparable and their families stayed together.
Nidhi was home the night of the storm after starting out as a freshman at Seton Hall, where she was studying to become a medical assistant, her sister Disha said. She was starting to do her homework, “recalled her sister.
Meanwhile, Ayush had just transferred to Montclair State University, but she had not yet attended classes, MSU officials said, as the semester had not started when she disappeared. Disha said that she picked up her sister at 8 p.m. Wednesday when the storm turned into a frenzy.
“I just let her go even though she was raining,” she said, “Usually she’s never home. She spends a lot of time with her friends and Ayush.” At first, Disha wasn’t worried when Nidhi didn’t come home, she had even let her sister take her umbrella to keep her dry from the torrential rains that began to hit the area.
“I trust Ayush,” she said. “I knew he would protect her. But when she arrived at midnight, the family went looking and found her car in the sewer, the couple’s last known location. “I didn’t expect the car to roll over,” Disha said. “I thought they would be in the car waiting for the water to turn down.”
