Nicole Panos Wiki – Nicole Panos Biography
Nicole Panos tried to save little Kaia after the animal attacked them in her native South Africa in October. The mother of a one-year-old girl who was killed by a charging giraffe last year was also paralyzed from the waist down as she tried to protect her children from her.
Her four-year-old son Kayden suffered skull fractures in the tragic incident, at Kuleni Game Park, but survived after huddling in the sand. Sadly, year-old Kaia died as a result of a traumatic head injury. The heartbroken mother held her in her arms.
Speaking for the first time, Ms. Panos told The Sun her world “completely fell apart the day Kaia died”. The family believes the giraffe was protecting a calf. Ms. Panos said that she was confused because she had not been threatening the animal.

Terrifying attack in South Africa
But as a mother, Ms. Panos said she understands the “instinct that kicks in to protect her children.” “My last thought before she attacked us was worry, ‘Where’s her baby?’ But she took mine away,” she added.
Mrs. Panos and her husband Jason live at the family-run luxury playground with her children. It is a popular holiday destination. She worked in the wilderness training business as a marine facilitator, student mentor, and birth doula aspirant.
On that tragic day, Mrs. Panos was due to meet a student and she arranged for her children to stay with her grandparents. After a relaxing morning in bed with her children, she left her house to walk with them the short distance to her parents’ house.
In the distance, Ms. Panos saw a male and a female giraffe. However, she could not see the breeding animals. The female giraffe was watching the family, but Ms. Panos said this was not unusual as she was often curious. However, she thought it strange that the calf was not there.
“I had Kaia in my arms, Kayden was walking in front of me,” she said. “Suddenly, I heard this noise behind us and I turned around, and I saw her coming towards us.” Ms. Panos said the animal’s head was down and she was heading straight for them, “running very fast.”
She yelled for her son Kayden to run, while Kaia was in her arms, before feeling a blow to her back and knocking herself unconscious. Mrs. Panos woke up to see the giraffe heading toward Kayden, but she couldn’t move to help him. She again fainted and when she woke up, her mother was holding little Kaia. She thought both children were alive before losing consciousness again.
The children were rushed for medical attention: Kayden was sent to the hospital while Kaia went to a local doctor. Kaia died there in the arms of her grandfather.
Ms Panos’s spinal injuries meant that she had to wait four hours before being airlifted to hospital. Her family tried to keep the tragic news of Kaia’s death from her until after her surgery, but Ms. Panos’s maternal instincts were new.
“I asked them to tell me the truth and we all broke down,” she said. “I’ve been in survival mode ever since, and probably will be for the rest of my life.” Kayden has struggled with the loss of her sister, as Ms. Panos says she would go to her and “greet her every morning with this big hug.”
Ms. Panos was in the hospital for more than three weeks, including 16 days in intensive care. In addition to being paralyzed, she had multiple rib fractures and internal organ damage.
Of her daughter, Mrs. Panos said, “She was the most wonderful, funniest, most beautiful soul, who loved everything and everyone.” She loved life. ‘She felt, and she still feels, like sunlight. She radiated happiness. A GoFundMe page was created to help Ms. Panos and Kayden get back on their feet. So far it has raised over $33,000.
