Nesta Howells is the wife of Former Grandstand presenter Frank Bough. Her husband is being reported to have died aged 87 years old on October 21st, 2020. He was an English television presenter. He was best known as the former host of BBC sports and current affairs shows including Grandstand, Nationwide, and Breakfast Time, which he launched alongside Selina Scott and Nick Ross.

Over a long broadcasting career, Bough became renowned for his smooth, relaxed, and professional approach to live broadcasts, once being described as “the most unassailable performer on British television”. In 1987, Michael Parkinson said: “If my life depended on the smooth handling of a TV show, Bough would be my first choice to be in charge.” In 1988, Bough was sacked by the BBC, following revelations that he had taken cocaine and visited brothels. He later presented programs on London Weekend Television, ITV, Sky TV and on London’s LBC radio before his retirement in 1998.

Bough joined the BBC as a presenter and reporter, presenting a new Newcastle upon Tyne-based show called Home at Six, soon renamed North at Six and then in 1963 becoming BBC Look North. Between 1964 and 1968, he was the presenter of Sportsview and in 1964 became the presenter of the BBC Sports Review of the Year, which he would host for 18 years. Between 1968 and 1983, he was a regular host for 15 years of the BBC’s flagship Saturday afternoon sports program Grandstand.

A talented sportsman, Bough began presenting Sportsview in 1964, taking over from Peter Dimmock before moving onto Grandstand – the BBC’s leading sports show on a Saturday afternoon.

His reputation for a calm and unflappable style once prompted Michael Parkinson’s remark that “if my life depended on the smooth handling of a TV show he’d be the one I’d want in charge”.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker paid tribute, writing on Twitter: “Sorry to hear that Frank Bough has passed away. Grew up watching him present Grandstand on Saturdays. He was a brilliant presenter who made it all look so easy. RIP Frank.”

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan tweeted: “RIP Frank Bough, 87. Star of Grandstand, Nationwide and Breakfast Time. His career was ruined by scandal, but he was one of the great live TV presenters. Sad news.”

Nick Owen, who went up against Bough in Britain’s breakfast TV battle on ITV’s TV-AM in the 1980s, remembered him as “the ultimate broadcaster who combined news and sport brilliantly”.

A BBC spokesperson said: “Frank excelled as a live presenter with the BBC for many years and we are very sorry to hear of his passing. We send our condolences to his family and friends.”

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling remembered meeting Bough as a young reporter. “He was kind, helpful and generous with his time,” he wrote, adding that the presenter was “one of the very best in the business”.
