Nathan Bernhard, 27, appeared in court Thursday charged with felony driving after allegedly hitting Bobby Kelsall, 36, and Stephen Lippis, 41, Wednesday night in a cul-de-sac in North Nowra, on the south coast of New South Wales. A man is accused of running over his two best friends while allegedly drunk after they jumped on the road to try to stop him from getting behind the wheel.
Police will argue in court that the three men had been drinking together before the first State of Origin game that night when Bernhard decided he wanted to drive home, which he was only a 15-minute walk away. Police will further allege that the two friends tried to stop him by lying down on the road around 7 p.m.

He was arrested and taken to the Nowra police station, where he underwent a breath test before being taken to hospital for mandatory tests. “The three of them were partners,” she told the Daily Telegraph. ‘This has been such a tragic and terrible incident. I’m still in shock. Bernard was charged with dangerous driving resulting in death, reckless driving resulting in death, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was granted bail on the condition that he does not drive a car or attempt to contact any prosecution witnesses and he will appear in court again on August 9.
