Molly Pearson Dies after being run over by a box truck
Molly Pearson was riding a Lime rental moped last Tuesday night when she was hit by a white box truck and thrown in front of the vehicle, immediately hitting her. EMS quickly arrived on the scene and transported Pearson to Bellevue Hospital, where she held onto her life before she died on Saturday. “It’s devastating,” Pearson’s mother told the New York Daily News.
Pearson, who used to work at Albert’s Café where she grew up in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, was described as someone who ‘always brought an abundance of energy, joy and an intoxicating smile’ in the cafe. Her family described her as “kind, complicated and unapologetic.” The 24-year-old graduated from Berkeley College in New York and had recently moved to Brooklyn when she began a new career at the Williamsburg Equinox gym.
In her obituary, Pearson was described as an outdoorsy person who enjoyed hiking and followed the motto of “never leaving anyone behind” on the trail. “So whether you were hiking up a mountain or leaving a theater with her, Molly would wait and make sure no one was left behind,” her family wrote.
Police said Pearson was driving the moped alongside the truck when the 33-year-old truck driver tried to make a right turn at the intersection of Meeker Avenue and Skillman Avenue and struck her. Pearson was thrown off the scooter and into the truck’s path, where she ran over her body. Police said Pearson had suffered “severe trauma to her lower limbs.”
The truck driver operating the box truck remained at the scene to speak with the police. There have been no arrests and the New York Police Department is investigating the incident. Pearson’s death is reminiscent of the Revel moped accidents that occurred last summer, where three people died while riding in New York City.
Revel had briefly stopped his services in the wake of the accidents, which occurred 10 days apart. The service resumed after it launched a safety course for 360,000 of its users to complete before they could rent mopeds. The company has launched around 3,000 electric mopeds since 2019, and Lime appeared earlier this year as a competitor with 1,000 scooters and 100 mopeds.
“We are devastated to learn of this tragic incident,” Lime spokesman Russell Murphy said in a statement. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this extremely difficult time. We have been in contact with the NYPD and have offered to assist in their investigation to the extent possible. ”
