Mikala Jones was surfing off the coast of the Mentawai Islands when he reportedly severed a femoral artery and died due to blood loss. Hawaiian surfer Mikala Jones has died after sustaining a fatal injury in the waves in Indonesia.
The exact details of the death are still unclear, but other legends of the surfing world have paid tribute to Jones. Jones’ daughter, Isabella, shared several touching photos of her and her father together, explaining that her “daddy of hers had a bad surfing accident and didn’t make it.”
She added that she was “so incredulous right now, this doesn’t feel real” but that she was “happy he was doing what she loved the most.” Mrs Jones also said: ‘I love you so much Daddy and I wish I could give you one last hug. I wish I could tell you again how much I love you and thank you for being the best dad. I wish you were still here with us, you weren’t supposed to leave yet. This is too soon.
She continued: ‘Life will never be the same without you. I miss you so much, I would do anything to have one more moment, even if it was us arguing and then laughing our heads off.
‘Thank you for teaching me so many life lessons and for always being there for me. I wish you were still here with us right now. I will always be thinking of you, dad. Jones was born and raised in Rock Point in Hawaii, surf magazine Stab reported, adding that she moved to Bali in the early 2000s.

He was known within the surf community for discovering uncharted surf breaks around the world and was passionate about preserving them.
Jones was also known for using a GoPro, documenting the fabric of it beneath cascading waves around the world and providing incredible footage. Various still images of him appeared on the cover of surf magazines and journals throughout his career.
Surfing legend and three-time world champion Mick Fanning shared a photo on Instagram of Jones and himself standing together.
‘So heartbroken to hear the news. Mikala, you were unique. Funny, easygoing, an explorer, a pioneer, but most of all a loving husband and father. I will miss your sense of humor and your classic phrases. I love how you always kept it real but were a true ambassador of aloha.
‘To Emma and the girls sending so much love. Mikala loved you more than anything and she always showed us photos and videos with the proudest smile on her face. Grateful to have known you for the last 25 years and honored to go exploring with you in that time. You will be missed. #MJallday May you always get caught guiding your family from above. Brian Bielmann, a photographer and friend of Jones, wrote on Instagram: “I put on the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys album Smile, made a cup of coffee, and sat down to make this really sad post.” Our friend Mikala Jones passed away yesterday at The Mentawais while he was riding the waves he loved.
‘I am very sorry and I send prayers to his family. He was 44 years old, and he is too young. He was a wonderful person, an amazing artist, the Go pro photos of him were amazing. …. We will miss him very much.
Bielmann continued: ‘I’ve been sitting here all morning trying to understand this reality. We will all die, but it’s so shocking when it’s as unexpected as this. What he packed into his 44th year was amazing. He lived a great life, was loved by many, and will never be forgotten. He left this world a beautiful soul. Can any of us ask to live a better life than that? Aloha Mikala, We love you, friend.
Jones is survived by his wife and his three children.
