Educational background
Michael matriculated from Cherokee High School in New Jersey in 1978, and then graduated from the Temple University in Philadelphia, with a BA in liberal arts. While studying he tried himself as a model, and met a photographer named Bruce Weber. The latter saw the acting talent in Michael, and paid for his classes at Manhattan’s Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where Michael studied acting and performing.
Career
Sports career
Being a passionate sportsman, Michael gave a lot of time to freestyle wrestling, and was even a member of the National Junior Wrestling Team.
Coached by Archie Stalcup, he won several medals and trophies in multiple championships and tournaments, including the gold medal from the international tournament in Munich, Germany (1978). He later used his wrestling skills on the set of his movie “Vision Quest”, in which he played a guy named Kuch who had a fight with his friend.
Modelling career
In the middle of ‘80s Michael worked as a model for GQ magazine, really enjoying the work as it gave him an opportunity to travel around the globe for more than two years, participating in several international projects and demonstrating the clothes from Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Missoni and Perry Ellis among others. During this period of time, he was noticed by authoritative casting directors and was invited to try himself as an actor – Michael couldn’t refuse the offer.
Acting career
Michael debuted in John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles” (1984), playing the character of Jake Ryan in this romantic melodrama, and was instantly remembered by the large audience who still call him “Jake from Sixteen Candles”. Michael was only 23 at the time, and dreamt of more offers to come from other directors. However, he only received approximately one offer per year, which made it difficult for him to earn enough money for himself and his growing family. Nevertheless, he starred in such movies as “Vision Quest” and “Sylvester” both in 1985, “Let’s Get Harry” (1986) and “Slaves of New York” (1989). By this time he was seriously thinking of quitting the industry, as he had huge gaps between movies, and had no other source of income. However, he decided to appear in several more films such as “Longtime Companion” (1989), “Mermaids” (1990) and “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” (1991), but then quit Hollywood forever.
The life after acting
Finally leaving the entertainment industry in 1991, Michael decided to work with his own hands, and started producing handcrafted furniture, developing his skills in woodworking. He opened a shop from where he sold his furniture, or discussed customized furniture pieces according to the request of his customers. In one of his interviews he shared: ‘The thing about furniture that’s much better than acting is that it’s just me. There’s no director, no script – the concept is me, unless a client wants something’. In his interview with the Los Angeles Times in 1990 he also admitted that the income he got from starring in the movies was too unpredictable, and he sometimes waited for months to get a glimpse of hope for another offer, but he couldn’t afford to wait as he had a family to feed. According to Michael, he didn’t ever regret quitting the acting niche.
Personal life, wife Valerie C. Robinson
Michael married Valerie C. Robinson, a model and actress, by the end of ‘80s; she is also known as Valerie Carpenter Bernstein. They worked together for GQ and met at the photoshoot. As an actress, Valeria can be seen in such movies as “Having Babies II” (1977), “One Shoe Makes It Murder” (1982), “Over the Brooklyn Bridge” (1984) and “Patty Hearst” (1988). She also had minor roles in the series entitled “Lottery!” (1983 – 1984), and the short movie “Awful” (2018). Both Valerie and Michael now enjoy their quiet life in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania owning their furniture store. They now have two children, a son Zane, and a daughter, Scarlet.
Scarlett Schoeffling
Michael’s daughter, Scarlet, is now the most source of the information about the Schoefflings, as she is a famous model and is very active on her Instagram account, sharing old and current photos of her family members. She appears in various commercials, magazines and on the catwalk. She has been dating actor and male model Sean Biloski for several years already. Scarlett is signed to such model agencies as One Management (New York) and LA Models. She is also a member of Innovative Artists, a talent agency which promotes her as a TV and film actress.
Social media presence
Michael is not at all active on social media and doesn’t have any accounts. However, his daughter, Scarlett, is quite active on her Instagram account, which is followed by over 15,000 subscribers. Michael’s fans created his fan page on Facebook which has almost 9,000 followers, though Michael never managed the page himself.
Appearance, clothing style
Michael has short black hair and hazel eyes. He is 6ft (1.83m) tall and weighs around 187lbs (85kgs); his vital statistics are not available at the moment. It is hard to say how he looks now, in 2019, as even his social-media-active daughter hasn’t posted an up-to-date photo of her father.
However, he probably prefers casual and comfortable clothes, which won’t bother him while he is working with wood.
Net worth and salary
At the moment of leaving the movie industry Michael’s net worth was estimated to be around $500,000; however, authoritative sources lack the information about his current net worth, as he tries to keep the details of his business out of social media, guarding his private life in Pennsylvania. According to his own words in an interview with Los Angeles Times, living in Pennsylvania is much cheaper than living in Los Angeles, as one doesn’t need much for such a lifestyle.
