The brothers, identified as Michael Lelko, 45, and John Melko, 41, lived at the residence with their mother and sister, who have not been seen since 2015 and 2019. Illinois authorities conducting a wellness check on a home in Lyons were greeted by two brothers living in ruins, who claimed they buried their mother and sister in their backyard.
Lyons police have no idea whether the brother’s admission is real, but they reached out to archaeologists and test technicians to begin excavating Friday at a home near Center Avenue.

Brothers Claim They Buried Mother & Mentally Sister
“At this point, we just don’t know, but we treat every death investigation as a homicide because we can’t go back, right?” Lyons Police Chief Thomas Herrion said. “If we treat it as ‘natural causes’ and we do not investigate any potential crime, it is very difficult to undo what we have done.”
Fox 32 reports that the incident began when a neighbor saw one of the brothers crawl out of a window with a dog. The neighbor asked for a wellness check shortly after. When the officers arrived at the scene, Michael Lelko spoke to them first while they searched the house. The police noted that the house was uninhabitable, without water, gas or electricity. Officers also removed two dogs from the home.

“I have never seen anything so bad. There were numerous bottles of urine: two-liter containers, five-liter containers. You walk in and they are lying around the house. There isn’t a room in this house that I can’t, and I was there personally, along with two other officers, that I could walk into without stepping on anything. “

The brothers told police that their mentally ill sister pushed their mother down the stairs in 2015. Their mother later suffered a stroke and reportedly passed away that same year. Police became suspicious when Michael Lelko allegedly said that his sister died of COVID in 2019, as the disease did not appear in the US until 2020.
No deaths in the home have been reported to the state. Michal Lelko said they couldn’t afford funerals, so the bodies were kept at home and buried. Again, it is still unclear whether the brothers are telling the truth, Lyons reiterated, and they are not currently facing any charges.
“Right now we don’t have a crime,” Herion said. “At this moment we don’t know if their bodies are buried in the backyard or not. These are just their statements. ” Police said the brothers were detained for a medical check-up, but have not been charged with any crime. Authorities provided them with a hotel and food on Thursday after the hospital released them.
