Matthew Trebek Wiki – Matthew Trebek Biography

Matthew Trebek is the only son of famed game show host and cultural icon Alex Trebek, who became a household name in the United States due to his 30+ years hosting the popular quiz show Jeopardy.

Alex Trebek has passed away after a lengthy battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He died “peacefully at home” while “surrounded by family and friends” on November 8, Jeopardy shared on the official Twitter account.

Trebek graduated from Fordham University in 2013. According to his LinkedIn profile, he majored in communications and business. But his side job as a bartender ultimately had a bigger impact on his choice of career. He even honed his skills as a mixologist by attending the National Bartenders School in 2011.

Trebek explained to Fordham Magazine that he was inspired to pursue a career in the hospitality industry after working at a restaurant called Willow Road in Chelsea. In addition to serving drinks at the bar, Trebek began learning about restaurant design by going to work for the contractor who had designed Willow Road. Trebek told the magazine he loved the idea of becoming a restauranteur because he could pursue a wide range of interests. “It’s great because it’s very free form in that it allows you to venture out into so many different fields: design, food, drinks, music, graphic design, and even just talking to people.”

Trebek added that he always wanted his business to become part of the community. He and his business partners now give back by hosting a weekly soup kitchen, called Lucille’s Family Meal, in Harlem. Trebek’s mother, Jean, spotlighted the initiative on her website, InsideWink, in February 2020. In the piece, he explained that part of the goal was to create a unique experience for the guests.

At the church, we aim to give guests a more dignified dining experience through creating a dining room like you would find in any restaurant. Ten large tables with ten seats are dressed with tableclothes and silverware that has all been collected through the church’s congregation. There is no buffet line, which is another important factor, instead the volunteers from the church act as servers.

The meals the chefs provide, the embrace and conversation that the church provides, and the transportation and organization myself, Nodar, and Alex provide, these are all things that each person does every single day regardless… so it is really about directing that energy to something positive.

Matthew Trebek & Alex Trebek

Alex Trebek’s children created a special Father’s Day message for him in 2020. They shared memories about Alex in an article for InsideWink, Jean Trebek’s website. In the feature, Matthew shared that his father was always excited to attend his sporting events. “There are many good memories, but I really loved it when my Dad would come to all of my paintball tournaments with me… although it was a very unique sport, he still got very enthusiastic about watching and learning the game.”

Matthew Trebek suggested that he learned how to fix things around the house from his father. When asked how he and Alex are alike, Matthew responded, “We both tend to be discerning when it comes to sharing our feelings and I think we’re both very capable in taking care of most household repairs.” His sister, Emily, touched on her father’s skills as well. “I always call him if I have an issue around the house and he’ll be over within the hour with the perfect tool!”

Matthew Trebek has said he used to attend Jeopardy tapings during his childhood. He told the New York Post in 2016 that the game show had a family feel which inspired him in his own career. He explained he strived to make his restaurant’s small staff feel like a family.

Health Condition

In March 2019, Trebek announced in a YouTube video that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. But he vowed to fight the cancer and continue to host “Jeopardy” as long as he could — he even cracked a joke about not being able to quit because he was contracted to host the show until 2022.

Trebek said:

Hi everyone. I have some news to share with you and it’s in keeping with my longtime policy of being open and transparent with our ‘Jeopardy’ fanbase. I also wanted to prevent you from reading or hearing some overblown or inaccurate reports regarding my health. So, therefore, I wanted to be the one to pass along this information. Now, just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week, I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Now, normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working and with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.

Truth told, I have to because under the terms of my contract I have to host ‘Jeopardy’ for three more years. So help me, keep the faith and we’ll win. We’ll get it done.

One year later, he gave an update on his prognosis. “I’d be lying,” he said, “if I said the journey was an easy one … there were moments of great pain, days when certain bodily functions no longer functioned, and sudden massive attacks of great depression that made me wonder if it really was worth fighting on. But I brushed that aside quickly because that would have been a massive betrayal.”

He said it would have betrayed his wife, his faith in God, the millions of prayers his fans were saying in his name, and the other cancer patients who were looking to him for inspiration.

“My oncologist tried to cheer me up the other day,” Trebek said. “He said, ‘You know Alex, even though the two-year survival rate is only 7%, he was certain that one year from now, the two of us would be sitting in his office, celebrating my second anniversary of survival.’ And you know something? If I — no, if we — because so many of us are involved in this same situation — if we take it just one day at a time, with a positive attitude, anything is possible. I’ll keep you posted.”

In addition to cancer, Trebek suffered two mild heart attacks over the years — the first in December 2007 and the second in June 2012. In both cases, he was back to work about a month later.

In October 2017, Trebek suffered a fall that later required him to have surgery to remove blood clots — known as a subdural hematoma — from his brain.

“Surgery was performed. After two days in the hospital, I came home to start recovery. The prognosis is excellent and I expect to be back in the studio to tape more ‘Jeopardy’ programs very, very soon. I want to thank all of you for your concern,” he said in a video posted to the “Jeopardy” YouTube page.

Alex Trebek Death

Alex Trebek, the legendary “Jeopardy” host, has died at the age of 80 on Sunday, November 8, in California after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a tweet from the show that reads, “Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex.”

Trebek was a game show staple, hosting more than a dozen other shows and specials over his nearly 60-year career. He returned to host the 37th season of “Jeopardy” earlier this year, despite the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the news of Trebek’s death, Jennings retweeted the official announcement from the Jeopardy Twitter account: “Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex.”

Then, Jennings wrote his own tribute to Trebek.

“Alex wasn’t just the best ever at what he did,” Jennings tweeted. “He was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and I’m grateful for every minute I got to spend with him. Thinking today about his family and his Jeopardy! family—which, in a way, included millions of us.“
