Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles’ chance meeting in March 1972 started an extreme conversation about charm between the two. Not long after that, they left their private families and went to the nation to give lessons and understanding of God and life. ABC News’ 20/20: The Cult Next Door’ dives into how Marshall and Bonnie attracted numerous devotees over many years and how that ended in massive self-destruction in 1997. Before that, though, the couple visited different states. and resided in many places. If you’re wondering how they earned enough to pay the bills, here’s what we know.
How did Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles make their money? Bonnie was confident in seeing crystals, and was told by some psychics that she would meet a tall, unnerving man with fair hair and a handsome complexion. When she met Marshall in 1972, she accepted that he was the person the fortunetellers told her about. In 1973, Bonnie’s little girl, Terrie, said that her mother and Marshall chose to move on from their families to form her own congregation.
The two became associated due to their views on charm and how God gave them guidelines. Bonnie and Marshall traveled across the country and surprisingly, they visited Canada. However, they struggled with cash and ate cheaply, frequently resting in a tent. In the long run, the cabal’s way of thinking was affected by Marshall’s childhood as the son of a Presbyterian servant and Bonnie’s advantage in divination, the Bible, and séances. They also joined science fiction in their convictions because they seriously loved Star Wars.
Over the next several years, Marshall and Bonnie even offered their blood and kept odd sources of income to keep up with the costs. At the time, his point was to reach more people with his lessons, but that proved unsuccessful at first. After more than a year away from home, they returned to Houston, Texas and had their first follower in Sharon Morgan. They used his Visa at times, but his better half eventually filed a complaint with the police for credit card misrepresentation. Although the charges were dropped, experts noted that Marshall rented a vehicle in Missouri and never returned, which landed him in prison.
While in jail, Marshall concocted an explanation for the convictions and was turned in in 1975. In September of that year, he and Bonnie went to a humble community in Oregon where they persuaded 20 people to leave behind their previous lifestyles and they would follow them. By then, at that time, they were letting their devotees know that strangers would visit them and give them new bodies, for which they needed to leave their old “supports” (human body) behind.
During the 1970s, the religion had cash thanks to one of the devotees’ trusted stores that paid for most things. In 1983, Bonnie became ill and lost one of her eyes. She soon spread into her body, causing her demise in 1985. Now, Marshall changed her lessons, saying that they had to kill themselves to get to the next level. The underlying lessons from him did not include passing as a stage.
By 1997, Marshall and numerous other followers were living in a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California. They had also heard about the Hale-Bopp comet that was going to move towards Earth. The members of the group accepted that a spaceship also appeared next to the comet. Marshall let his followers know that they had to commit suicide to get on the boat leaving their bodies behind. Thus, Marshall and 38 of his followers committed suicide in March 1997. In the group that paved the way, the cabal made a large part of its money planning web pages for other people.
Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles’ net worth at the time of their deaths Marshall and Bonnie worked random temp jobs for most of their time in the religion, leaving them without consistent pay.
