Mark Steines is the ex-husband of Leanza Cornett. He is an American broadcast journalist and actor who was host of the syndicated gossip and entertainment round-up program Entertainment Tonight from 2004 to 2012, joining the program on August 24, 1995. He left the show on July 27, 2012. From 2012 to 2018, he co-hosted Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family.

Steines has competed four times in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race at the Long Beach Grand Prix, the most recent being in 2013. According to records kept by the event’s celebrity coordinator, The Celebrity Source, Gene Hackman and Bruce Jenner are the only celebrities who have competed more times than Steines in the 38-year history of the race.

After graduation, Steines worked in the newsroom at KWWL-TV in Waterloo, Iowa, rising up the ranks to reporter and photographer. He then moved on to KSPR in Springfield, Missouri, where he was the sports anchor until 1991. His career led him to KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, California, and ESPN assignments. Steines was awarded two Emmys and a Golden Mike Award for work he did on KCAL specials.

In addition to his work as a broadcast journalist, Steines has done some acting. One of his roles was as a security guard in the movie Nixon (1995).

According to friend and family spokesperson, Elizabeth Tobin Kurtz, Cornett suffered a head injury on the evening of Monday, Oct. 12, and underwent surgery the next morning. Kurtz said in a news release on Monday, “Leanza Cornett, Jacksonville’s own Miss Florida 1992 and Miss America 1993, is recovering from a fall that required a decompressive craniectomy, performed to relieve pressure, treat brain swelling and manage bleeding. Doctors cannot speculate on the time Leanza may need to move through this phase of recovery as every brain injury is different.”

A post shared on Oct. 18 to Leanza’s Circle of Love Facebook page said, “She sustained an enormous blow to the back of her head. The surgery she had on Tuesday was to stop the bleeding in her brain. Right now there is some continued bleeding and swelling. Brain injuries are not black and white. We have to just take this day by day. She has an incredible medical team taking care of her.” It is still unclear how Cornett sustained the head injury.

Leanza Cornett Death

Cornett died on October 28, 2020, after being hospitalized after a head injury. She was 49 years old. The tragic news of her death first broke on Leanza Cornett’s Circle of Love, a social media page that was monitoring her condition after the injury. The post read: “Dear Disney family. I’m here to let you know Leanza passed this afternoon. She was so loved. I don’t feel like writing a lot right now; my heart is broken. Sue.”

The Miss America Organization confirmed her death in an Instagram post. The MAO team wrote: “It is with great sadness the Miss America Organization relays the news our beloved Miss America and friend, Leanza Cornett, has passed away. Leanza had a bright and beautiful spirit and her laugh was infectious. We know she meant so much to so many, including all of you. We are devastated by this sudden loss in our Miss America family and we are deeply sorry for her family and close friends for their loss. At the moment, we do not have any further information regarding a service for Leanza and we ask that you please respect her family during this difficult time. Hold on tight to those you love today. Time is certainly precious.”

I find comfort knowing Kai and Avery will forever have the best guardian angel watching over them as they navigate life’s path.
