Marius Timofte, 33, from Alnwickhill, felt feverish on Saturday, March 11 and phoned his mum in Italy to tell her he had not been feeling great. The delivery driver explained that he was going to take some medicine and get a good night’s sleep before updating her the next day but sadly never woke up.
“His mum had phoned him in the morning to check how he was but got no response, she was instantly worried and contacted one of our friends here to go and check. “When Valentino our friend knocked on the door and got no response he started to bang on the door and try to break it down. The neighbors heard what was going on and came to help.
One of the neighbors was a nurse and tried to give Marius CPR, but he had sadly already passed away. Stefana revealed that they believed he had tried to get help, as he was “laying in bed with his phone in his hand” when they found him. Marius and his family are from Brașov in Romania, where his body will be flown for the funeral.
His mum Dalilia, who lives back home in Italy, was scheduled to fly in to Edinburgh airport last night to meet Stefana, who described her as “absolutely heartbroken.” Marius was her only child, she added.
Paying tribute to her friend, Stefana said: “He was a very kind person. We worked together for years in a shop in Stockbridge that has shut down now. Every night when we finished our shift he would go outside and give food to the homeless people on his way home.
“He kept to himself and was very chilled out. He didn’t drink or smoke and didn’t go out much – he preferred to keep to himself. “The Romanian community is huge in Edinburgh and no one expected this – we are devastated.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.10 pm on Sunday, 12 March 2023, police were called to the Alnwickhill Terrace area of Edinburgh, following the sudden death of a 33-year-old man.”
