A man who was shot dead after taking hostages at a US synagogue has been identified as British citizen Malik Faisal Akram. Akram, a 44-year-old man from Blackburn in Lancashire, died Saturday in an hour-long standoff with police officers at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas.

All four hostages were uninjured. Today, the Foreign Office confirmed that the man was British.
The Metropolitan Police said counterterrorism officers were in contact with US authorities and FBI colleagues.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Matt DeSarno said he believed the man was “singularly focused on one issue and not specifically related to the Jewish community,” adding that they will “continue to work to find the motive.”

Speaking to reporters to confirm the kidnapper was dead, DeSarno said there would be “an independent investigation into the shooting incident.” The kidnapper is said to have demanded the release of Pakistani neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui.

In 2010, she was convicted and sentenced in the US to 86 years in prison for attempting to kill US Army officers while she was detained in Afghanistan two years earlier. The FBI and the US Department of Justice also accused her of being an “al-Qaeda operator and facilitator.”

The kidnapper’s brother, Gulbar, said the family is “absolutely devastated” that he was killed by police. He added, “We would like to say that we as a family do not condone any of his actions and would like to sincerely and wholeheartedly apologize to all the victims involved in the unfortunate incident.”

In the Facebook post, Gulbar said: “Although my brother suffered from mental health problems, we trusted that he would not harm the hostages. “…Later there was a shootout and he was shot dead…There was nothing we could have said or done to him that would have convinced him to surrender.”

He added: “We would also like to add that any attack on any human being, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim, etc., is wrong and should always be condemned. “It is absolutely inexcusable for a Muslim to attack a Jew or for any Jew to attack a Muslim, Christian, Hindu, etc. etc.
