Lenaya Cardwell was charged with murder for the murder of Nevaeh Allen, Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said at a press conference On Wednesday. A Baton Rouge mother was arrested Wednesday for allegedly killing her 2-year-old daughter, whose body was recovered in the Mississippi woods last week.
Neveah was first reported missing on Friday, September 24, when police responded to the Cardwell residence, where Cardwell’s resident boyfriend, Phillip Gardner, told police that he had woken up from a nap and could not find the kid. Cardwell was reportedly working at the time.
Lenaya Cardwell Charged – Arrested
Nevaeh’s remains were found in a wooded area near Hancock, Missippi on Sunday. Cardwell’s boyfriend, Phillip Gardner, was arrested for his involvement in disposing of Nevaeh’s deceased body and bringing it across state lines earlier this week. He was charged with illegal disposal of human remains and obstruction for allegedly dumping the body of the dead child.
Nevaeh’s death was ruled a homicide by the state coroner’s office. However, further details about his death were not yet available pending further investigation.
“As a law enforcement agency, the safety of our citizens is of the utmost importance, and this is especially true for our children,” said Chief Paul. “As a parent, the well-being of my children is sacred and I am sure the same is true for everyone who is watching …”
“I would like to offer my condolences to all who loved this little angel … we are lifting them up in prayer during this difficult time.” Cardwell told reporters crying on Friday that she had been at work all day and that it was different from Nevaeh leaving alone.
“Nevaeh is not known for wandering, I never had to correct Nevaeh for leaving home without an adult,” Cardwell told reporters between sobs. “That’s all I know. If you see my baby, contact the police. Please, I just want my baby home.”
