An emotional young woman, whose partner committed suicide, has spoken about her struggle with drug addiction and depression. Leigh Hinkley, 30, from Melbourne, was a loyal family man who loved to make others happy. However, no one could understand what was going on under his pleasant demeanor. On February 21, Hinkley, the father of two young children, three-year-old Patrick and six-month-old Harrison, ended his life by committing suicide.

With men having difficulty expressing their emotions, Whitley Fleet, her partner of eight years, spoke about the value of making sure family and friends are safe. Hours before his body was discovered in south-east Melbourne, Fleet was the last person Hinkley spoke to. “It’s something you don’t wish on anyone. My world has been turned upside down,” Fleet said, according to the Daily Mail.

A week earlier, Fleet noticed some worrying signs that Hinkley wasn’t himself and tried to get him to open up. Fleet said: “I was the last person Leigh spoke to. She then explained the entire call: “I spoke to him on the phone to tell him that everything would be fine and asked where he was.”

Fleet continued: “But he refused to tell me where he was and kept saying he was sorry. That was it.” He said that Hinkley was compassionate and that he was always ready for a laugh or a joke. For many years, he struggled on and off with drug addiction and mental health issues. She said:

“He would hide it from me or lie about it and he would never express to me or anyone how he felt about it,” he said, according to the Daily Mail. A heartbroken Fleet concluded: “In the end, the depression was too much for him and it pushed him over the edge.” Just hours before his death, Hinkley shared a terribly distressing message on Facebook. He wrote: ”

You will never understand how much I love you, Whitney, even though I hurt you, lied to you, stole you, destroyed everything. I’m sorry you never deserved that. I love you Bubby. I can’t live without you.” Despite the heartbreaking loss, Fleet is focused on raising his children and making sure they know it’s okay to express what they feel.

“I want them to grow up and be able to tell me how they feel and not have to hold back all the time,” he said. He has asked people to seek help when things get out of hand. “Get help and reach out to anyone. Mental health is a big problem, especially among men, who find it difficult to express their feelings,” Fleet concluded.
