The unexpected death of a ‘fit and sound’ 13-year-old girl has shaken a family, who thought she had simply disappeared with the seasonal flu. To pay tribute to Lauren Menzies, an “ordinary cheeky teen” who tragically ended up in concentrated care due to sepsis, her parents are now trying to raise money for research.

As told by her mother, Sarah Menzies, at one point, Lauren was on the couch “watching Current Family and complaining about the kind of Lucozade they bought her,” and then “less than 12 hours later she was fighting for her life. … a battle that was tragically to be lost, less than six days after the fact.”

‘This shouldn’t have happened’ According to Yippee News, the blogger from Britain claimed that despite her little girl not feeling quite well on December 4, 2019, she was “fine” to go to class the next day. She had the “standard cold/flu side effects,” the blogger said. However, by Friday night, after Lauren spent the day feeling sick from what she at first accepted as a stomach bug, things had taken a turn for the worse.

“I was concerned about several of his side effects, rapid breathing and messiness,” Sarah wrote. Then, at that point, she took her to the trauma center, “entirely hoping to be seen as an overprotective parent.

Her family anticipated that she should make a full recovery, so they opted to silence her. However, on Tuesday “everything changed”. “Obviously, Lauren had weakened overnight,” said her mother. “After finger painting and fingerprints, after singing… we said our last goodbyes (and) turned off Lauren’s machines. It was amazing, she was fit and solid…and then she was dead.

We are all in shock. This should not have happened. We all felt that Lauren would improve. Finally, we took her to the emergency clinic, she sought all the proper treatment, she should be fine”.

More than three years after the fact, Lauren’s family is still adjusting to her passing and struggling to raise funds and attention for the dangerous disease that protected her. “Sepsis ruins so many lives, slips in quietly, and causes untold damage from post-sepsis disorder, loss of appendages, and death,” Sarah said on Facebook this week. “5 people in the UK spend every hour from Sepsis”. The Australian Sepsis Organization reports that reviews show sepsis generates approximately 5,000 approvals and 18,000 serious consideration unit affirmations each year in Australia.
