Kristen spent her childhood in Philadelphia, where she was raised by her father, Harvey Welker who worked as an engineer, and mother Julie Welker, who was a real estate agent. Regarding her education, Kristen attended Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, and upon matriculation in 1994, she enrolled in Harvard College, from which she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in 1998, majoring in History.

Kristen’s professional journalism career started in the late 1990s, in Providence, Rhode Island where she was hired at ABC affiliate WLNE-TV, and where she spent three years before joining KRCR-TV in Redding/Chico, California in 2001.
