She used to watch the movies of the animator and producer Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran (MGR) and that encouraged her to seek a calling in acting.
Her sister and father held onto her fantasies of becoming a cheerleader.

Kovai Sarala was in the ninth grade when she was offered her first film job in the film Velli Ratham.

When she was in the 10th grade, she was cast as Arukkani, a 32-year-old pregnant woman, in the 1983 Tamil romantic comedy film Mundhanai Mudichu.

She took on the role of Venkamma, Annavaram’s partner, in the 2000 Telugu film Rayalaseema Ramanna Chowdary and this work earned Kovai Sarala a Nandi Award in the “Best Female Comedian” class.

It was screened in the 2003 Telugu film Ori nee Prema Bangaram Kanu. This again earned her a Nandi Award for “Best Female Comedian”.

In 2011, Kovai Sarala co-starred as Sarala, Raghava’s mother, in the Tamil-language horror parody film Kanchana (also called Muni 2: Kanchana). This work earned her the Vijay Award for “Best Female Comedian”.

She has served as a regular visiting judge in Sun TV’s unscripted Tamil-language parody TV drama Asatha Povathu Yaaru? She also as a judge in Vijay TV Tamil Comedyil satire program Kalakkuvathu Epadi as well as Zee Tamil parody program Varuthapadatha valibar sangam.

Alongside Prabhu Deva, Tamannaah, Nandita Swetha and Dimple Hayathi, Kovai Sarala co-starred as lawyer Lalitha in the 2019 Tamil blood and gore parody Devi 2, a follow-up to the 2016 film Devi.

She has been part of Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam, an ideological group.
