Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn, the parents of 11-month-old Mercedes Lain, have been charged with child neglect in the girl’s death, while babysitter Justin Miller has been charged with child neglect that caused death, such as CrimeOnline previously reported. The father of a girl found dead last week after her parents left her with a babysitter has a prior child neglect conviction in which he allowed a man to sexually abuse a 12-year-old daughter.
Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn Charged – Arrested
Baby Mercedes’ body was found last Wednesday in a remote area of Starke County, Indiana, three days after the baby was reported missing and after the arrests of Lain, Coburn and Miller. Miller reportedly took investigators to the body.
The South Bend Tribune reported that Lain pleaded guilty to negligence in 2016 when a 20-year-old man was found to have sexually abused Lain’s daughter. According to court records, Lain and his then-wife, Mary Lain, knew the abuse was happening and did nothing to stop it, even letting him live in their home for two months.
Mary Lain also pleaded guilty to neglect, and Angel Delapaz, 20, pleaded guilty to child abuse. The 12-year-old girl later gave birth to a son sired by Delapaz.
According to the Tribune, the daughter told police that her parents “discussed” her relationship with Delapaz with her and her father told her that “age shouldn’t matter.” And Mary Lain, along with her boyfriend, who was living with Lains and the 12-year-old girl at the time, admitted to investigators that Delapaz gave Kenneth Lain marijuana in exchange for having sex with the girl. The 12-year-old girl was taken from the home and then she and her son were adopted by a staff member from a group home. WKVI reported. As for Mercedes, CrimeOnline previously reported that family members had been trying to get the boy out of the home without success.
“We tried everything in our power to get this baby taken from them,” said Angie Owens, Mercedes’ maternal grandmother. “We have called [child protective services] many times. There is nothing more we could have done than what we did. We have gone beyond our power to do everything we can to help this baby. ”
Owens said Lain and Coburn “were definitely not good parents. They didn’t need to have a child. ”
Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said last week there was “no evidence whatsoever” that Lain, who filed a missing person report on Aug. 15, and Coburn knew that Mercedes was dead after her disappearance. Court documents say the parents left Mercedes with Miller on Aug. 12 “so the parents could have a break.”
Miller and the girl stayed at a motel in Plymouth until Aug. 14, when she brought the baby to a home in Mishawaka. Miller told police that he woke up some time that day to find the girl dead. He reportedly left the boy’s body in a wooded area of Starke County that same day.
Chipman told the Tribune that an autopsy was performed on Friday, but did not immediately release the results. Lain and Coburn are due to return to court on September 15; The charges against Miller were officially filed early Monday and no court date has been set.
