She often appeared on-course to report on current golf events, as a part of the network’s live tournament team.

Incident with Tiger Woods

In a 2008 PGA Tour Telecast alongside Nick Faldo, Kelly made a joking remark about lynching Tiger Woods in a back alley after Nick commented on younger players ganging up on Woods. There was no ill intent with the remark, and even Tiger Woods’ agent said that he didn’t think that there was any ill intent. Despite that, numerous news channels covered the broadcast leading to civil rights activist Al Sharpton becoming very vocal that Kelly should be fired immediately. She then apologized for her remarks during a broadcast a few days later.

While the Golf Channel initially had a stand of not suspending her as a result of the remarks, the continuing controversy caused the network to reverse their decision, suspending her for two weeks. Sharpton continued to push for her firing, and wanted to meet with Golf Channel executives as the remark was “an insult to all blacks”. The Golf Channel rehired Vince Cellini in response to the possibility that Kelly would be fired, but that never came to fruition As a result of the incident, the magazine “Golfweek” decided to run a story, however, they used a controversial image of a hanging noose leading to a lot of criticism and the firing of editor Dave Seanor.
