Kay Combs is the wife of Freddie Combs, a minister known for singing on season 2 of “The X-Factor,” died Sept. 10, according to a Cocoa, Florida, funeral home. He was 49 years old. Freddie previously appeared on the TLC series Ton of Love and Heavy Ever After.

The singer later gained traction on the second season of The X Factor in 2012, when he wowed the judges with his stunning rendition of Bette Midler’s hit “Wind Beneath My Wings.” He was eliminated shortly after.

Although he had struggled with his weight his entire life, Freddie had recently been working to improve his health. After X-Factor, the couple spent most of their time traveling and evangelizing but ducked when the COVID-19 pandemic struck as Freddie was immunosuppressed due to his ongoing health issues.

“He lost up to 385 pounds [during that time],” says Kay. “And I can tell you that I have never been prouder of someone. Ultimately, the battle with weight and fluids over the years contributed to kidney damage and ultimately kidney failure.”

Freddie Combs Cause of Death

Freddie Combs, a minister known for singing on season 2 of “The X-Factor,” died Sept. 10, according to a Cocoa, Florida, funeral home. He was 49 years old.

Although he didn’t last long on “The X-Factor,” Combs was a fan favorite. He auditioned in Greensboro, N.C., singing Bette Midler’s 1988 song “Wind Beneath My Wings” in front of famous judges Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, L.A. Reid and Demi Lovato. On his audition episode, which aired in 2012, he also shared his experiences with weight loss. In 2009, at 920 pounds, he had been hospitalized and was on the brink of death. Exercise and a change in diet helped him lose nearly 400 pounds when he appeared on “The X-Factor,” where he was escorted in a wheelchair by his wife Kay, who was his caregiver until his death.

“My wife, Kay, is an incredible woman. She started taking care of me right after we were married in ’96, and as she gained weight, she demanded more of her. She is the closest thing to an angel and a saint that I know, ”she said at the time.

“When I was bedridden and never left the house, my music was never heard,” he said. “My biggest dream would be to give hope to people of my size so that they can achieve their dreams. And I know people might think that I would never get a chance, and maybe I won’t, but I hope the judges will look past my looks and give a fat guy a chance. ”

On the show, Cowell and Reid told Combs that they would support him if he continued to lose weight.

TMZ reported that Combs died of kidney failure.
