Judd Stone II, the Texas solicitor general, makes his Supreme Court debut.

Judd Stone II, a former Clerk to Conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, was appointed Texas Attorney General earlier this year. On Monday, he will take on his most prominent challenge to date: arguing before the Supreme Court on behalf of the State in two challenges to its new anti-abortion law.

Stone, who took office in February, joined the state attorney general’s office in 2020. He was appointed by Ken Paxton, the state attorney general. His predecessor, Kyle Hawkins, called Mr. Stone’s appeals defense skills “unmatched.” He oversees a law office that oversees and approves all state appeals litigation.

Prior to joining the attorney general’s office, Mr. Stone was senior counsel for Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, himself a former Texas attorney general.

Mr. Stone practiced law in Washington, DC, in the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Group of Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, and at the law firms Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel and Frederick. He was also an Olin-Searle-Smith Fellow at Harvard Law School.

Prior to his career in private practice, Mr. Stone worked for Mr. Scalia, for Justice Edith Jones on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Justice Daniel Winfree on the Supreme Court of Alaska. . He graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas and Northwestern University School of Law.

Mr. Hawkins, the former attorney general, announced his resignation in January. In particular, he had refused to join Paxton’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
