Police say a man was killed by officers over the weekend in the southwestern Missouri city of Joplin. Police say 41-year-old Joseph Shane Endicott of Carl Junction died Saturday after being shot by police who responded to a riot call. A police press release says a 911 caller reported being assaulted by a gunman shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with officers arriving minutes later.

That’s when Endicott was shot, but police have not said whether Endicott was armed or what led him to shoot. Police have also not said how many officers fired their guns, but that three Joplin officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The man who was shot dead by Joplin police officers Saturday afternoon in response to a report of an ongoing robbery at 1523 S. Kentucky Ave. has been identified as Joseph Shane Endicott, 41, of Carl Junction.

Captain William Davis of the Joplin Police Department said in a news release that an autopsy was to be performed on Endicott’s body this morning in the Ozark as part of the investigation into the shooting of the officers involved.

Few details have been released about the shooting that took place when officers arrived at the address at 3:42 p.m. in response to a 911 call from someone allegedly assaulted by a man with a gun. The identity of the person he called has not been revealed.

Three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation with the help of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Jeff Lehr is a reporter for The Joplin Globe.
