Jô Soares, an icon of Brazilian television, has died at the age of 84. In the years leading up to the 2016 coup, he treated Dilma Rousseff with respect on her late-night talk show. As a result, he was the victim of a smear campaign and was expelled from the Globo TV network. He had been a mainstay of mainstream and conservative television for decades.

Since July 28, 2022, Jô Soares has been undergoing treatment at the Sirio Libanes hospital in Sao Paulo for pneumonia. However, the precise cause of death is still unknown. Family members have not disclosed how long Soares had the illness or if he had previously experienced other health problems.

Soares, a well-known comedian, talk show host, novelist, and musician, was born on January 16, 1938. He was fluent in Portuguese, English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

Following in his great-grandfather’s footsteps, he initially intended to become a diplomat, but eventually returned to Brazil to enroll in acting classes. He completed his education in the 1950s at a Swiss boarding school. In 1954, Soares made his acting debut in musical films, and in 1958 he began his television career. He contributed to films like O Homem do Sputnik and Vai Que e Mole.

He later received roles in three other comedy shows, including Face Humor, Nao Faca Guerra, Satiricom, and Planeta dos Homens, before participating in the well-known television series A Familia Trapo in 1967.

The 1976 film O Pai do Povo had Jô as main actor, producer and director. In Viva o Gordo, he played a variety of characters after joining Globo TV in 1970. He later joined SBT and hosted the talk show Jo Onze e Meia as well as creating another show, Veja o Gordo.

Soares founded the program Programa do Jo after returning to Globo TV. He has published several novels, including Assassinato na Academia Brasileira de Letras, O Homem que Matou Getulio Vargas, and Xango de Baker Street.

As a result of his many appearances in movies and TV shows, Jô Soares had recently become a household name in the entertainment industry. As news of his passing spread, Twitter was flooded with tributes: He had three marriages and a son, Raphael, who passed away in 2014.
