Pte Jethro Watson-Pickering of the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, was part of a crew operating an armored vehicle in Wiltshire on Friday. The vehicle rolled over near Enford and collided with a tree, trapping several soldiers inside, a source told the BBC. The Yorkshire Regiment said on Facebook that its thoughts and prayers were with the Pte Watson-Pickering family.

He also confirmed that the 23-year-old was from the town of Boosbeck, in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire.  The presence of live ammunition meant firefighters couldn’t use cutting equipment, so Army engineers rescued that inside, the source said. The Royal Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers took several hours to free the soldiers.

About a dozen officers from the Wiltshire Police and the Military Defense Police attended. A tank is understood to have capsized in the incident, leaving a soldier with significant injuries, Wiltshire Today reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In a statement, the regiment said: ‘The Yorkshire regiment is very sorry to announce the death on Friday 15 October of Pte Jethro Watson-Pickering.

“He was from Boosbeck, Redcar, and Cleveland, and he was destined to exercise in Salisbury Plain. The thoughts and prayers of the regiment’s family are with their family.”  A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating the circumstances following the death of a 23-year-old soldier at noon on 15 October. I was part of a crew operating an armored vehicle and participating in a military exercise at the Salisbury Plain training area, near the town of Enford.

Wiltshire Police said a joint investigation was launched with the Health and Safety Executive and the Army. An Army spokesman added: “It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Private Jethro Watson-Pickering in an incident at the Salisbury Plain training area.” “The thoughts and condolences of the Army are with the family and friends of Pte Watson-Pickering at this sad time.” The British Army currently numbers about 76,500 soldiers, with about 15,000 in the entire West Country.

‘This is now a joint investigation between the Wiltshire Police, the Army, and the Health and Safety Executive. “Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time, and we ask that their privacy be respected.” An Army spokesperson added: ‘It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of a soldier in the Salisbury Plain training area. “Wiltshire Police are investigating and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further.”
