Famous DJ and performer Jerry Blavat recently passed away on January 20 at the age of 82 due to myasthenia gravis and other health issues. He was hospitalized at Jefferson-Methodist Hospital at the time of his death.

6 ABC Action News anchor Alicia Vitarelli paid tribute to Blavat with a series of images, writing that he was a living legend. She was also close friends with Blavat and said:

“For decades, ‘The Geator with the Heater’ (‘The Boss with the Hot Sauce’) has been the voice of this city and beyond. His talents have lifted up many other artists, absolute legends in their own right. The contagious enthusiasm Jerry’s joy, vibrant, kind soul, and friendship to all has been a beacon of light.”

She added:

“He Shines on all of us and makes us better for it. From you, Jerry, we learned how to lift others up and truly live life. International superstar. Philadelphia’s best cheerleader. An absolute treasure.”

Myasthenia gravis (MG) causes weakness and fatigue in the muscles, which do not remain under voluntary control. A failure in the normal communication between the nerves and the muscles can lead to what is also called MG.

MG is common among women under the age of 40 and men over the age of 60. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, double vision or diplopia, slurred speech, swallowing and chewing problems, and changes in facial expressions.

According to experts, sometimes children are born with a rare form of myasthenia gravis, called a congenital myasthenic syndrome.

The disease can lead to serious complications such as a myasthenic crisis, tumors in the thymus gland, an underactive or overactive thyroid, and autoimmune conditions. A permanent cure for myasthenia gravis is not yet available.

Born on July 3, 1940, Jerry Blavat began his career in radio and hosted many shows, including Bandstand. He owned a record store company called the Record Museum, which is no longer in business.

He gained recognition as the host of The Discophonic Scene. He went on to appear in various movies and television shows, including The Mod Squad, The Tonight Show, The Monkees, Desperately Seeking Susan, Baby It’s You, and Cookie.

Blavat also became the subject of a death hoax after he canceled some scheduled events. He shut down the Facebook rumors at the time and mentioned on his website that he was dealing with a problem with his shoulders.

Jerry Blavat is survived by his partner Keely Stahl, four daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
