Jelani  Day was last in contact with his family on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021. They haven’t heard from him since, which is very “different from him,” his mother Carmen Day told Dateline. Police in Bloomington, Illinois, is searching for a college graduate student who was reported missing by his family and a faculty member on August 25.

“I call him my ‘bill collector son,'” she said. “Because he just calls me and calls me, non-stop, several times a day. So not hearing from him for a week is very inappropriate for him. Something is not right.”

Jelani has just started her first semester of graduate study at the Department of Communication, Science, and Disorders at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. He lives in an off-campus apartment in nearby Bloomington, but his mother told Dateline that he often returns to Danville, Illinois, which he is an hour away.

That Monday night, Jelani also exchanged texts about course work with the University’s Director of Clinical Education, Cara Boester, who told NBC affiliate WWEK-TV that they were supposed to meet the next morning. .

“When he didn’t show up, I texted him to see what was going on and he didn’t answer me,” she said. “I knew he had class at 1pm, so I waited for him after class and he didn’t show up.” She added that this sort of thing isn’t something his graduate students would do, and it’s certainly not something Jelani would do.

Boester notified campus police, who responded to Jelani’s parents’ home on Wednesday. His mother Carmen told Dateline that it was the day they discovered that she was missing. She explained that among her four other children, three older than Jelani and one younger, they manage to keep up. “She had been busy planning a trip she was about to take and I didn’t realize that my son hadn’t been calling me nonstop,” she said. “I assumed that one of his brothers or sisters had spoken to him.”
