The 23-year-old started sixth in the array but used a combination of technique, racing specialty and tiring executives to win with a wellness vehicle and race interfered warning and secure a good victory.

The success was Daruvala’s most memorable this season. It comes after the Red Bull-backed racer jumped from fifth to third in Saturday’s Sprint race, making two rigs in two races this weekend and eight this year. It was also his sixth top-three finish at Monza and second win at the track after the Indian won his final year.

“What a weekend. It has had to happen. We’ve had success taken away for some explanation over and over again this year. In any case, we kept our heads down, continued to accept, continued to push, and finally made it. Also, what a scenario to do it too,” said Daruvala.

“Monza is up there with one of my favorite tracks still intact and standing on the top step of this incredible platform, on the main straight with the Indian public anthem going on, feels so unique.”

Daruvala made a good escape, but the start of the dirty side of the lattice was blocked after the underlying start. He held on to sixth as the field tore through the main chicane, but lost a place to Juri Vips when he went all the way up waiting for a safety car after a first-lap detour that included Ralph Boschung and Theo Pourchaire.

The welfare vehicle wasn’t transported until another time, however, and Daruvala had to guard against Jack Doohan on the run to the second Roggia chicane.

The pair went wheel-to-wheel in the slowdown zone with Logan Sargeant going wide at the chicane. Doohan, with Daruvala inside and Sargeant outside, had nowhere to go and ended up crashing into Jehan.

The Indian racer, however, sustained minor damage and continued while the safety car was finally dispatched. Dashing continued towards the end of Lap 5 with Daruvala running seventh. However, an accident by Calan Williams at the Ascari chicane caused the wellness car to go out again on lap 8.

Daruvala immediately jumped at the opportunity to pit, and the superbly planned snap-in eventually took him to third place once his other adversaries pitted. That left him perfectly positioned to contend for success when the warning was sent to allow track workers to clean up Williams’ abandoned Trident and fix the limits.

The race continued after a ten minute stop. Daruvala proceeded to give a masterclass in tyres, boards and race creation as he waited for his chance at the start before putting pressure on race pioneer Richard Verschoor and second placed Marino Sato.

He passed Sato on lap 18 of 30 and was behind Verschoor. Regardless, the Trident racer, battling tire wear, pitted with just five laps to go, giving Daruvala a lead that he would hold until the checkered flag.

The title will return to its last and final round of time on November 18, at the end of week 20, close to the season-ending Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
