Six-part series The novel Ruby Speaking is based on Jayde Adams’ personal experience working in a metropolitan contact center. A comedian claims her next show will represent “Bristol’s working class”.

Instead of focusing solely on well-off Clifton, the comedian said she wanted to highlight south Bristol, where she grew up.

She commented,

“I really wanted to show what working-class life is really like here, not some kind of cliché.”

“I think this is frequently portrayed in a lot of television shows produced by people who are not from the area they write about,” he continued.

Joe Sims, a fellow Bristolian, plays the character Tom in the series.

“He is an extremely loud and arrogant salesman. He likes to drink a few beers and have a good time,” Mr Sims said.

Jayde Adams stated on BBC Radio Bristol that the character was “as close to toxic masculinity as you can get without having to confront it.”

A few years ago, the comedian who co-created the show and played Ruby said she was inspired by a visit to a contact center.

She was worried that their reunion would be unpleasant because they had followed separate career paths since college.

Ms. Adams commented:

“I realized that she was happier than me.”

She continued,

“I just discovered a group of people who were really happy and enjoying life together.”

After putting out a casting call for local actors, the comedy series also discovered new talent in twenty-year-old Dan Hiscox.

‘Bristolian talent’

Hiscox, who was cast as Craig, had previously worked as an extra but had never had a speaking role.

Adams said the young chef from Pucklechurch, near Bristol, “impressed us with his charisma”.

“He is an exceptional talent. “I’m lucky and I’m happy to have beaten him.”

Sims said it was crucial “to be able to shine a light on the Bristol talent that is indigenous here, both in front of and behind the camera”.

ITV X will broadcast Ruby Speaking later this year.
