A college-prep teen football player was crushed to death in a freak accident. The cause was a faulty elevator, allegedly overdue for inspection, that fell into free fall into a high-rise building in Atlanta on Tuesday, Aug. 31. The horrified teammates of the deceased witnessed the fatal incident. Three players took the elevator to the top floor of the building. Soon after, the elevator felt like it was starting to fall before stopping and opening normally on the third floor. Two of the three players made it to the third floor, but before McFarland could get out, the elevator began to fall freely. He was trapped between a wall and the elevator car in the shaft for almost an hour until help arrived. Atlanta police confirmed that officers responded to assist fire and rescue personnel after receiving reports of a person trapped and crushed in the elevator Tuesday afternoon.
