Jamel Martinez Wiki – Jamel Martinez Biography
Jamel Martinez, 18, started a fire in his 10th-floor apartment in NYCHA’s East River Houses on E 105th Street around 4:40 p.m. before jumping off the roof to his death, law enforcement sources told The Post. The fire was brought down by the FDNY, police said.
The teenager had just been discharged from Bellevue Hospital about a month ago after battling depression, Martinez’s grieving father, James White, told The Post. The father said that he had begged the hospital not to release his son, whom he said he had “changed” in recent years. He said the pressures of graduating from high school had weighed heavily on his son.
“This is my son who did this. This is my son, ”said White, 53, as he paced back and forth off the scene. “He wasn’t supposed to leave Bellevue Hospital. I told Bellevue Hospital not to release him, to take him to a program that he could think through.” White, who does not live in the building, said the hospital discharged him anyway, even though he was taking prescription drugs.
He “He went through something that his mind fell on. He ran away from home, ”White said. “He was already in the news for a missing child. He needed help … people don’t take this mental issue seriously. ”
Jamel Martinez Battling depression sets home on fire
At least one person died after a fire broke out in a New York City Housing Authority apartment building in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, September 18. Authorities were reportedly called to a kitchen fire in an apartment at East River Houses along 105th Street near FDR Drive just before 4.30pm.
Approximately 20 New York City Fire Department units with 80 members responded to the ten-story building. The fire was reportedly considered under control at 5.12pm. Eighteen-year-old Jamel Martínez was pronounced dead at the scene after falling from a high place, authorities said.
However, law enforcement sources said Martinez may have had mental health problems. They also said that he set fire to the kitchen before jumping to his death. Martinez’s grieving father, James White, told the New York Post that the teenager had just been discharged from Bellevue Hospital about a month ago after battling depression. “My daughter called me and told me that the house was burning and that she was on the Citizen app and that she thinks Jamel jumped off the roof and could be dead,” he said.
White said he had pleaded with the hospital not to release his son, whom he said he had “changed” in the past two years. He said the pressures of graduating from high school had weighed heavily on his son. “This is my son who did this. This is my son, ”said the 53-year-old. “He wasn’t supposed to leave Bellevue Hospital. I told Bellevue Hospital not to release him, to take him to a program that he could think through.”
White, who does not live in the building, said the hospital discharged him anyway, even though he was taking prescription drugs. “He went through something that his mind fell on. He ran away from home, ”White said. “He was already in the news for a missing child. He needed help … people don’t take this mental issue seriously. ”
White said his son’s mental health problems may have been made worse by drug exposure. Before his deteriorating mental health and introduction to drugs, he said his son was always interested in computers and technology. “He was a good boy,” White said. “He was a nice, warm and sweet boy.”
Rosemary Negron, a 60-year-old resident, told the New York Post that Martinez landed on top of a car. “I feel terrible,” she said. “He was a boy. I don’t know what happened to him when he would do something like that. “A 12-year-old boy also said he heard a loud bang when he saw Martinez hit the car.” His mother was crying, “he told the Post.” I feel really sad “.
“He was a sweet boy. Respectable, decent, loving and caring. Just a beautiful kid, ”a 10th-floor neighbor told the NY Daily News, adding that Martinez had recently graduated from high school. He also said that she and her daughter were napping at her house when the fire broke out. “Suddenly, we couldn’t see,” she said. “There was smoke everywhere.”
He said firefighters knocked on her door and told her and her daughter to stay put. But they eventually evacuated her home. “We got up and ran because the apartment was filling with smoke,” she said. “We couldn’t breathe. We just ran.”
