Maxted, a handball player from Great Britain, was arrested after security cameras caught him trying to sell cocaine on December 15, 2021, at 3:20 am. m. in Warrington town center. In the indictment, Iain Criddle told the court that Maxted made an “unsophisticated attempt” to sell cocaine.
A CCTV camera was directly above Maxted as he tried to make a deal. The person operating the camera contacted the police and Maxted was found with a bag of cocaine in his hand and 12 in his pocket, which he intended to “undersell” for £20 each.

Jebb described his client as a “young man with considerable promise”, saying he has returned to playing rugby, been in a relationship for 14 months, and was holding down a job, which brought him salary and commission, since his arrest.

Maxted’s cocaine use had become a “problem” at the time of the crime, but he was no longer using drugs, Jebb said. He explained that Maxted’s behavior since his arrest demonstrated that he was “capable of leading a law-abiding and productive lifestyle.”
He said his client, who has no prior convictions, does not pose any danger or risk to the public. When sentencing, Mr. Recorder J Close told Maxted that his offense was “extraordinarily serious”. He said that drug trafficking was “trafficking misery” that “spreads nothing but death and destruction.”
However, he told the trader that his attempts to trade him were “unbelievably inept, which speaks to his level of sophistication” about him. The judge noted that Maxted attempted to traffic a Class A drug directly under a CCTV camera, adding that a drug transaction “with increased risk of discovery is hard to imagine.”
He told Maxted: ‘You come across as a criminally naive young man.’ The judge said the 26-year-old “went off the rails for six months” and that his criminal activity was limited to street traffic, with no network behind it.
Although dealing a Schedule A drug would usually result in immediate custody, Recorder Close said the “weight of other factors” allowed him to suspend the sentence. The judge pointed out Maxted’s good character, remorse, use of him and the lack of risk of recidivism when passing sentence.
Maxted walked free from court after being sentenced to 20 months, suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 250 hours of unpaid work, which he must complete outside of working hours. Recorder Close said: ‘You don’t have free time. That’s what you’ve brought yourself.’
He added: ‘You do that job or you go to jail.’ Before Maxted left the court, the judge said: ‘Today you have been given a chance. There won’t be a second one.
