Cause of Death
The victim, named as Jackson Ryan Winkeler, 26, from Dillon, is understood to have been gunned down at Florence Regional Airport at around 6am.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said that 26-year old Officer Winkeler, who was assigned to the Florence Regional Airport Police, made a traffic stop on Gilbert Avenue shortly before 6 a.m. on Jan 5.
A South Carolina airport officer was shot dead during a traffic stop on Sunday morning, police have confirmed.
Officials have identified the gunman as 37-year-old James Edward Bell.
No information has been released about what police suspect was Bell’s motive for killing the young police officer.
Official Winkeler, who was additionally a volunteer fireman with the Latta Fire Department, lived in Dillon and experienced childhood in Floydale, as per his Facebook page.
“He lost his life doing what he cherished the most. Helping individuals. Jackson was probably the best fireman that you would ever have on a fire scene,” Dillon County Fire Lieutenant Nic Bethea told WPDE.
“Regardless of what time it was, Jackson was eager to help,” Lt. Bethea proceeded. “Jackson showed at least a bit of kindness of gold. From myself and all of Dillon County Station 2 firemen, we will keep appealing to God for the family. Latta Fire 23 will always be Jackson Winkeler.”
The banner at the Latta Fire Department was brought down to half staff on Sunday in memory of Officer Winkeler.
Merchants Police Chief Crystal Moore said that she was a school asset official at Latta High School five years prior when the future Officer Winkeler first moved toward her about making his profession in law authorization.
‘The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is here and stands prepared to react again whenever called to help every single neighborhood office if the need emerges.
‘For the benefit of Sheriff Barnes and Chief Deputy Kirby we ask that the network please keep Jackson Winkeler’s family, companions, and associates in their petitions as they process what has happened.
‘They have our most profound compassion and we will help them in any capacity conceivable.’
Lexington County Sheriff’s Department tweeted: ‘We’re grieving with the Florence Regional Airport Police Department after the passing of Officer Jackson Winkeler.
‘Sheriff Koon and the whole LCSD family send ardent sympathies to Officer Winkeler’s family, companions, and individual hirelings in the Pee Dee open security network.’
The episode in Florence County is said to be the principal official included shooting in South Carolina in 2020.
In 2019, there were 45 official included shootings in South Carolina – none included the Florence Regional Airport.
