Jackie Michelle Cottrill was found dead on January 24 by her nephew Josh Brocklebank, who discovered she had been strangled after her clothes were trapped in the oven, according to LancsLive. During an investigation earlier this week, medical examiner Dr. James Adeley said that in his 20 years of professional experience, “he had never encountered this happening.”
“What appears to have happened is that for some reason she fell and caught the top of her pajamas on the lower handle of the oven door,” Adeley said in the investigation, according to the outlet. “And due to extraordinary bad luck, she died. I cannot explain how she ended up in this position,” he continued, sharing that the cause of her death was recorded as suffocation. “It is a very unusual case.”

Miss Cottrill was found dead in her home in Blackburn on January 24 by hers by hers nephew Josh Brocklebank who had been staying with her. He came downstairs at lunchtime to find her collapsed by the oven door. A post-mortem examination revealed no signs of disease. Death was caused by compression of Miss Cottrill’s neck.

“Being as outgoing as she was, she never saw this as a job, but as an opportunity to spend time with her friends and make new friends with hers,” added Cottrill’s children. “Blackburn has lost a true character and the city, pubs, and game nights will never be the same without her. Her daughters, Sarah Ramsdale and Toni Cottrill attended the hearing. “Only she knows how it happened,” said Miss Ramsdale.
