After a nail-biting three-hour finale, Iam Tongi is the newest American Idol! In Sunday’s season finale of the singing competition series, Tongi, 18, was crowned the winner after an impressive performance of his original song “I’ll Be Seeing You.”
He was up against Megan Danielle and Colin Stough, who placed second and third, respectively. After host Ryan Seacrest crowned Tongi the winner, he sang “Don’t Let Go” as his family, judges and audience members swayed and celebrated the feat.
Tongi previously brought the judges to tears during his audition, where he dedicated the song “Monsters” to his father, who died months before his audition.
“I wasn’t worried if you were going to top the song, I was worried if we were going to top the song. Your dad is so proud,” judge Lionel Richie said at the time, as Katy Perry. he noted, “What a fantastic song to choose from. You’re making these grown men cry.”

Earlier this month, Perry, 38, opened up to PEOPLE in a group interview about how the competition was fierce, but there was something special about Tongi.
“I think the top three are strong, I think Megan Danielle has earned the right to be there and she has a beautiful new confidence,” he said.
Perry added, “The sound in the room when I am shows up is undeniable. He’s an undeniable character. He has some kind of incredible magic. You can hardly explain it. It’s a factor. It’s like you were born to do this, and it’s undeniable.”
Who is Iam Tongi: all about his family
Born William Tongi, I am from Hawaii. His family consists of six members. He is 18 years old. Tongi attended Kahuku High School and Middle School and is a senior at Decatur High School in Washington. His parents are Rodney and Lille Tongi. The 18-year-old also has a brother, Lerod, and two sisters, Cassandra Alvina and Leilei Tongi.
Rodney died in 2021 at the age of 50. He was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. Like his son, he was also a musician and Iam idol. Iam Tongi performed ‘Making Memories of Us’ with Keith Urban in the finale. After the performance, the American Idol winner revealed that his late father used to play Urban’s songs during his childhood.
“Can I just say one thing? Between you and Megan [Danielle] I had to take a little handkerchief and fold it into a triangle because every time you come and sing, the vibration that comes out of your mouth goes right through people’s hearts and just goes to them. It moves us a lot. So when you sing, I’m ready to feel, baby,” Katy Perry reacted excitedly.
