Hussein Saleh, 34, and Ali Salim, 35, appeared in Sutherland local court on Friday for the attack, which took place on December 28, 2021 in the southern Sydney suburb of Carlton. Two colleagues who beat and trampled a couple while they waited in a Covid test line have been sentenced for the ‘cowardly and vicious’ attack.
Both pleaded guilty to assault with actual bodily harm and common battery. Saleh also pleaded guilty to damaging property. The court heard that the incident began after Saleh’s wife stepped in line in front of a LandCruiser Prado.

During the attack, the LandCruiser rolled forward and collided with the rear of the Lexus in which Saleh’s wife and his mother were also traveling, sending other cars lined up sideways from the impact.
Magistrate Hugh Donnelly described the images as “shocking” and said the attack was “cowardly and vicious” and carried out with a “high degree of violence”. “The victim received multiple injuries to the head and face in a retaliatory attack,” he said, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The magistrate said her claims were not supported by CCTV or other evidence. The court heard that Saleh, a builder, was remorseful and understood that the couple would have been afraid. Character references said that Saleh’s actions were “out of character” and that he was not a violent person.

Donnelly noted that both men were at low risk of reoffending and had limited or no criminal records. However, he ruled that there was no choice but to sentence the men to terms behind bars. Saleh was sentenced to 22 months in jail with a non-parole period of 14 months, while Salim was jailed for 18 months with a non-parole period of 11 months.
Saleh and Salim will be eligible for parole in July and April 2024, respectively. The men applied for bail after their lawyer applied to appeal the sentence in the District Court. Judge Donnelly granted Salim bail, noting that there was a possibility that his sentence could be changed to serve in the community.
But he did not believe Saleh’s sentence would be changed on appeal and he denied his request. This is despite the fact that the court heard that his wife was pregnant and due next month.
