Hugh Laurie is an English animator, creator, prank artist, director, performer and vocalist. He is best known for playing Dr. Gregory House on the Fox clinical show television series House (2004-2012), for which he won two Brilliant Globe Grants and numerous other awards. He was recorded in the 2011 Guinness World Records as the most-watched host on television and was arguably the highest-paid entertainer on a television show, earning £250,000 ($409,000) per episode of House. His other television credits include arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper for the miniseries The Night Administrator (2016), for which he won his third Brilliant Globe Grant, and agent Tom James on the HBO sitcom Veep (2012-2019), for who accepted her tenth Emmy Scholarship nomination.
Laurie previously gained respect for her work as part of the double satire show Fry and Laurie with fellow parody sidekick Stephen Fry. The two men acted together in various ventures during the 1980s and 1990s, including the satire sketch series A Touch of Fry and Laurie and the PG Wodehouse variation Jeeves and Wooster. Laurie’s different works during this time include the Blackadder period parody series and the films Instinct and Reason (1995), 101 Dalmatians (1996), The Borrowers (1997) and Stuart Little (1999). Beyond acting, Laurie delivered the blues collections Let Them Talk (2011) and Didn’t It Downpour (2013), both to ideal audiences, and created the witty The Weapon Dealer (1996). Among his honors, Laurie has won three Brilliant Globe Grants and two Screen Entertainers Organization Grants and has been nominated for 10 Evening Emmy Awards. He was designated OBE in the 2007 New Year’s Commendations and CBE in the 2018 New Year’s Respects, both for administrations to display.
James Hugh Calum Laurie CBE was born on June 11, 1959 (age 63) in the Blackbird Leys area of Oxford, Joined Realm. Laurie’s parents, who were of Scottish descent, attended St Columba’s Presbyterian Church (now United Transformed Church) in Oxford. He notes that “trust in God did not assume an enormous role” in his home, but “a specific disposition to life and its habitation” did. He followed this up by saying: “Delight was something that was treated with extraordinary doubt, joy was something that…I planned to say that it must be obtained, but even the acquisition of that did not work. Laurie was raised in Oxford and attended the Mythical Beast School from the age of seven to 13, later expressing: “I was, indeed, a terrible child. He rowed through school and college like his dad. In 1977, he was a member of the junior coxed pair that brought home the English public championship before heading to England’s Junior Group in the 1977 World Junior Rowing Titles. In 1980, Laurie and his rowing partner, JS Palmer, they were sprinters in the coxless matches of the Silver Cup for the Eton Vikings rowing club. He, too, achieved a blue while taking part in the 1980 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Cambridge lost that year by five feet. During this time, Laurie spent up to eight hours preparing every day and was on her way to becoming an Olympic-level rower. She is a member of the Leander Club, one of the most established padel clubs on the planet, and was a member of the Hermes Club and the Falcons’ Club.
Hugh Laurie joined the Cambridge Footlights, a university emotional club that has brought in some notable entertainers and comedians after he had to stop rowing during a bout of glandular fever. There he met Emma Thompson, with whom he had a close relationship; the two remain old friends. She acquainted him with his future parody accomplice, Stephen Fry. Laurie, Sear, and Thompson later parodied themselves as the “Footlights School, Oxbridge” College Challenge delegates in “Bambi,” an episode of The Youthful Ones, with series co-writer Ben Elton completing their cluster.
Laurie’s final year at university, as well as rowing, Laurie was a leader of the Footlights, with Thompson as vice-chairman from 1980 to 1981. They brought their annual magazine, The Basement Tapes, to the Edinburgh Suburb Celebration and won the major Perrier Satire Grant. The revue was composed primarily of Laurie and Sear, with the cast also including Thompson, Tony Slattery, Paul Shearer, and Penny Dwyer. The Perrier Scholarship led to a move to the West End for The Basement Tapes and a television variant of the revue, broadcast in May 1982. It led to Laurie, Sear and Thompson being chosen, along with Ben Elton, Robbie Coltrane and Siobhan Redmond to compose and appear. in another sketch parody program for Granada TV, Al aire fresco, which lasted for two series.

Broil and Laurie cooperated on different projects during the 1980s and 1990s. Among them was the Blackadder series, composed by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis, with Rowan Atkinson, with Laurie in different jobs, including Ruler George and Lieutenant George. Different assignments followed, one of which was his BBC sketch satire series A Touch of Fry and Laurie; a further venture was Jeeves and Wooster, a variation on the PG Wodehouse accounts, where Laurie played Jeeves’ boss, the nice joke Bertie Wooster. He and Broil participated in cause stage events, such as Agitation! 1, 2 & 3 and The Mystery Police Officer’s Third Ball from Reprieve Worldwide, Entertainment Television shows and theatrical presentation Fry and Laurie Host a Christmas Night with the Stars. They teamed up again in the film Peter’s Companions (1992) and met for a 2010 review show called Fry and Laurie Rejoined.
Hugh Laurie appeared in the Thames TV film Letters from a Plane Pilot (1985) directed by David Hodgson. This was a major acting job, the film is sensationalized from letters home from JRA Pilot Officer “Bounce” Hodgson, an RAF Plane Order pilot, who was killed in real life in 1943.
Laurie appeared on music recordings of Kate Shrubbery’s 1986 single “Trial IV,” and Annie Lennox’s 1992 single “Strolling on Broken Glass” in the English Ruler-era ensemble alongside John Malkovich. Laurie appeared in the Flavor Young Ladies film Zest World (1997) and had a brief guest role in Partners in “The One with Ross’ Wedding” (1998). Later film appearances by her include Instinct and Reason (1995), adapted by and starring Emma Thompson; Disney’s startlingly realistic 101 Dalmatians (1996), where she played Jasper, one of the lawbreakers employed to capture the pups; Elton’s variation on his novel Incomprehensible, Perhaps Child (2000); Miss from Rio; the 2004 transformation of Ride of the Phoenix and Stuart Little.

He appeared in a variety of English-language television dramatizations, appearing as a visitor that year in two prime-time episodes of the government operative chilling series Frightens on BBC One beginning in 2002.
