Hayley Arceneaux is the youngest American to fly into space. As part of the four-member Inspiration4 Spacex crew, she’s making history. She attributes much of her current situation to her parents: her mother, Colleen, and her father, Howard. And although Howard is no longer alive, she is bringing a memory that honors him into space with her.

His father, Howard, died of cancer

Arceneaux’s father, Howard Arceneaux, died of cancer about three years ago. she told people. He was only 60 when he died in 2018 of kidney cancer. according to his obituary in The Advocate. He traveled the world and worked as a professional journalist. The Advocated noted that he began his career as a sportswriter, then worked as a student media consultant at LSU and also as an adjunct professor who taught Senior Media Ethics. He published two monthly magazines and also worked as a freelance journalist. Howard was adopted by Jess Arceneaux after his biological father, Howard Eakin Jr., was assassinated in Vietnam while serving in the military, his obituary noted.

Colleen arceneaux told St. Jude that Howard loved space and would be excited for his daughter to leave.

“His father loved the space,” he said. “He would have been so excited for her.”

Her brother Hayden, an aerospace engineer, is also excited for her and has been training her on the sensations she can expect while traveling, along with the more mundane things zero gravity can bring.

 She and her dad had worn black belts just before she was diagnosed with cancer.

Many years before her father had his own battle with cancer, Arceneaux was diagnosed at age 10. She and her father had worn black belts in Taekwondo, St. Jude reported, and at first it was believed that the pain in his leg was due to that. But when her mother saw a large egg-sized lump above her knee, they knew it was something else.

He had bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in his left femur. Arceneaux said that when they found out, everyone cried and she told her parents, “I don’t want to die.”

She and her parents traveled to St. Jude for treatment, which included about 12 rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove her knee and part of her femur. But because of the location of her growth plate in relation to the cancer, the surgeon had to implant a temporary prosthesis that could expand as she grew older. St. Jude reported.

Arceneaux is bringing a memory into space with her that will honor the memory of her father, she told people. She found a photo of him in his favorite St. Jude tie and knew this was the perfect keepsake.

She wrote: ”

To say that the tie is sassy is to put it lightly, and it used to give you a hard time wearing it. Jokingly, but not jokingly, he told him not to wear it, but he insisted on putting it on because he said people inevitably asked him about it, which would give him a chance to tell them about St. Jude. I found the tie and bring it. I know you would love for me to go into space on this mission that benefits St. Jude. It’s so perfect.

 Her mother wrote her letters to open in space

Arceneaux said that her mother, Colleen, wrote her letters to open in space, Today reported. He said he hopes to cry while reading them.

She said: “I am being very good, I am not going to open them on Earth, but it is going to be very special. (My tears) will float. I’ll let you know because I think that’s going to be really powerful for me. ”

Her mom encouraged her to take advantage of the SpaceX opportunity.

Arceneaux said that when she was offered the chance to go into space, her mother, Colleen, said she couldn’t pass it up. St. Jude reported. Colleen admitted that she had mixed feelings, but she also knew that her daughter had to go.

“I wasn’t going to say anything to influence her not to do what she wanted,” Colleen told St. Jude.
