Harlee Swols Charged in Double Throat-Slitting Murder
Harlee Swols, 22, of Enfield, was arrested at the scene for violating a protection order, but was charged Wednesday with the murder, according to police. The granddaughter of a woman who was killed in a double homicide in Enfield on Sunday was charged with two counts of murder, Enfield police announced Wednesday.
Police responded to the scene within four minutes and said they saw a broken glass window across a porch and stairs, and then saw someone in distress. Officers broke into the second-floor apartment and found a man and woman with major injuries, investigators said.
Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to Baystate Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The man was previously identified as James Samuel Bell, 63, and the woman was identified as Maryrose Riach, 72, according to police. Bell and Riach were in a dating relationship, they added.
When police entered the apartment, they said they found Swols inside. According to the police, Swols is Riach’s granddaughter.
Police said Swols entered the apartment’s kitchen area through a door while officers were there. According to court documents, officers could hear a shower in the bathroom that Swols came from and which was soaked through clothing complete with water and a “blood-like substance.”

Court documents reveal that according to police and the medical examiner’s office, Riach had 22 stab wounds, while Bell had 30 stab wounds. The coroner said both victims had throat lacerations. According to police, Swols had blood all over his clothing at the scene and “showed no signs of emotion.”
In court documents, an Uber driver said he picked up Swols from a Staples store in Brookside Plaza and then drove her to the apartment. While he was waiting for her outside at her request, the driver said he heard glass break and then heard a woman yelling “Help. Help,” according to the arrest warrant. Before the driver could call for help, officers arrived at the scene.
A neighbor also reported hearing a woman yell “Help me,” along with loud beating and screaming, the arrest warrant said.
Authorities said Swols was the subject of an earlier incident that led to a full protection order. In July, Swols was arrested and charged with assaulting an elderly victim or other victim and breaking the peace, according to Enfield police. Swols faced charges including violation of a protection order in connection with Sunday’s incident.
When she was questioned by police after Sunday’s incident, police said Swols told them that Riach had invited her to her apartment to collect some of her belongings and then “things got out of hand.” Swols told police there was an argument that quickly escalated. Swols is being held on $ 2,000,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday, police said.
