The Davidsons, born to Hamish and Sandra, immigrated to the United States in 1997. Hailey was born James Scott Davidson and has struggled with physical issues from childhood. She was born with a clubfoot and endured 30 operations during her childhood.

Davidson received a scholarship to play for Wilmington University in Delaware before moving to Christopher Newport, an NCAA Division III institution in Virginia. When asked to characterize herself as a child, Hailey said, “An angry golfer.” Hailey noticed something was wrong with her when she was eleven years old, and eight years later, she considered a medical change. She had gender transition surgery in January 2021, however she has been on hormone medication since September 24, 2015.

Hailey was the second transgender woman to participate in the first level of LPGA Q-School. Bobbie Lancaster was the first to participate, achieving Symera Tour status in 2013. Davidson missed the cut, but she won her first professional championship on the National Women’s Golf Association circuit. That same year, Hailey obtained confirmation from the LPGA that she could participate in a tour-qualifying school. She had completed at least one year of hormone treatment and had gender transition surgery.

Her father, Hamish Davidson, would drive her to different golf competitions. At first, Hamish said that it was tough to accept. In one of his interviews, Hamish said that he closed his eyes because Hailey wanted to transition for the first year. He informed his 85-year-old father, who backed Hailey’s choice.

Only then was Hamish truly committed. Sandra, Hailey’s mother, has been supportive from the beginning. In 2022, she defended her daughter against Andy Murray’s mother, Judy Murray. Judy Murray was opposed to Hailey getting an LPGA Tour card. She tweeted: “Not fair at all. Protect women’s sports. Listen to the facts, scientists, and physicians. “This is wrong.” Sandra responded to the Daily Record, saying, “Shame on Judy Murray for attacking another mother’s child.” You do not know my daughter Hailey, and most importantly, you know nothing about transgender men or women, thus you have no right to express an opinion on something you do not understand.”
