Mansfield was found not actually guilty of murder, but was sentenced to two years in prison with a two-year suspension for murder. The resigned air terminal superintendent told the Manchester Crown Court that despite his partner’s plea being the ‘saddest words he’d heard’, he agreed as far as he could commit. He was found at the home of the Hale couple, Greater Manchester, on the morning of 24 March 2017, while the body of Mrs Mansfield was located, hanging in a chair at the foot of their nursery.

After Mansfield called 999 and informed the manager that he had recently killed his significant other at 9pm and then committed suicide, police and paramedics arrived at the semi-isolated house in Canterbury Road. Mrs. Mansfield’s trachea had been severed and she emptied profusely through an etched 16 cm opening. Her body was found with three knives and a hammer nearby.

On the coffee table lay a note addressed to their loved ones. It read: “We apologize for the inconvenience, but there could be no other choice. We agreed to this when Dyanne was told she was ill. As the months went by and the decay, it only confirmed our decision that the opportunity arose because I was unable to live without Dyanne. Trust that everyone can understand. Try not to be excessively disturbed. Together we have led an excellent and contented life.”

The court was informed that Ms. Mansfield had not signed either note. Mansfield was given a medical procedure for wounds to his neck and the two wrists in the wake of being suspected of murder at the scene. After discussions with the couple’s family, companions and neighbors, police found that these individuals had positive comments about the litigant and his “faithful devotion” to his significant other. When it was recommended that he kill her as part of a self-destruct scheme, some didn’t even seem shocked, the jury was told.

Out of court, Mansfield reportedly spoke out that his significant other would be “furious” to discover he had violated a criminal record and encouraged officials to change regulations for murder and terminal illness. No one should come across what we did, he said. “My other half isn’t here today, which is sad. That’s exactly what we had to do; she didn’t have to die in such horrible conditions.’

According to the Daily Mail, Mr Justice Goose said at the time of sentencing the guilty party “The circumstances of this case are shocking to yourself and remarkable in previous cases of this court. You were under extremely deep pressure. I’m sure your activities were sparked by affection for your other half.’

Ms Mansfield’s brother, Peter Higson, read a proclamation to the court saying: “My sister is greatly missed. My understanding of her grave illness and agonizing misery kept me from being astonished at her passing. The way she passed was breathtaking, by the way.

That said, I’m ready to get to the bottom of what was going on with Graham. The moment my own better half died of malignant growth, I found myself in a comparative situation. I have no malice towards Graham and will be delighted to see our relationship progress. I would be very annoyed if Graham were promptly jailed. Graham has endured an inordinate amount of torment at the moment, as I would see it, and he will never fully recover.”
