After his playing career, he tried his hand at coaching and spent time at institutions such as Worcester Polytechnic, Albany, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers.

In 2012, he was allowed to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, followed by stops with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers. Hafley eventually became the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State, where he was recognized as a successful recruiter before being named head coach at Boston College in December 2019. On January 31, 2024, he was appointed as the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator.
